For a while several people have known that there were troubles brewing in the cash to keep Seti BOINC going... This was also evidenced with the increased number of outage to just get the servers going again... I think that as everyone comes here to chat (for Free) and you now know the danger that unless "WE" come up with the finances to support Your Favorite Chat Area... This does not mention the average cost of "entertainment." So you miss a Movie that was not any good anyways... There have been outages in the past and there will be outages in the future, regardless of what systems they purchase. Creating alot of hysteria and paranoia about the outages isn't going to get anyone to donate any quicker or more frequently than they plan to. Most of us who have been with the project for the past year (or more) are aware of the technical problems that UCB faces. No matter where you go, there you are... ID: 266574 ·

To come to the point where UCB is sending thousands of emails and posting publically that we need money is a statement that things are bad... So Server stuff aside which the majority of users do not understand nor care about. The Cafe Forum resides on one of those servers that has issues... If the money is not raised (I do have to say poor form) in x amount of months/days/weeks... Then something will happen... We can only "presume" that the last person leaving will pull the plug and turn out the lights. So if I just divide $750.000 /12 we currently have sustained Seti BOINC by two months... Let me calculate how much I have donated since May 20 1999.: 162,495 hours on classic gives about $.06/kWh * 162,495 hours * 0.2 kW/computer = $1949.94 assumes all was done on one computer. For Boinc 371,088.93 credits give about 371088 credits * .05 WU/credit * 2 hours/WU .1kW/laptop $.06/kWh = $222.65. The upfront costs that allow useless Forums to continue when the Science is the issue...
