I have wanted to do this for a while now lets see if it works here at the cafe.

Where is the best Deal for Parts and Why.

Do you have parts sitting around that Others could use to make the Computers Cruch Better.

Example: I need a Flat Panel LCD Monitor 19" or better.

Do you have one?
If not where is the best deal besides the rip offs at sites like EBAY.

Rules.

1. No Flames.
2. Keep it on Topic.
3. No Spam Sites Please.

Please any suggestions to make this work please email me at captain.avatar@gmail.com....

Lets try This.

and I can set up something for you.

I have to finacial interest short of getting equipment

Hmmmm.... CA, this looks like it could be a very useful thread. I, myself, will start building a new PC and, of course, will be in need of parts and pieces. I will keep my eye on this thread and post a request if and when needed. Thanks.... (-:<

I concure. Awesome thread. I have some older equipment that I am willing to trade out for other things. Someone could enjoy some of this older equipment to build/upgrade older things. I will try and get a list together sometime.

I did happen to find for you what seems like a good deal on a 19" monitor. The price is low and the reviews are more positive than negative. [link]

BTW, get better.

I second that "get better", Also Pricewatch has a nice 19"FP from Newegg. 8-)

Superior idea CA. I would have had a bunch of parts to list until recently. I had them in my closet since the Classic days. I didn't want to use them because, for me, average unit time was the thing. I just kept buying faster parts.

A little while ago I put most of them together and made three computers for my cancer support group. They're crunching Rosetta and Predictor now.

I'll spread the word though.

Another Captain Avatar coolness!

wow esp! I just found it and was considering it already. The one thing that bothers me about all the LCD monitors in broken Pizels and the return policies
for them. Some wont take them back unless they have 3 or more dead spots. som sites it's 8!....

But this Monitor seems like a good deal.

Since I am homebound I wanted to get one that I could set on my lap or the stand next to my easy chair. That way I dont have to get up and move to the work station.

I am going to cobb up a small puter tonite to sit behind my chair and net work it over..........

I realy can't afford the monitor but if I can use it after I get better it's worth it......

Lets keep this thread moving! Maybe we can get some good tech advice too!

Like how to refur bush a Old puter to dedicate it to SETI Stuff etc....

I have an Canon Lide 30 scanner just collecting dust.
And a Dell 17" CRT monitor {fairly new condition} as well, but it would probably cost more to ship than it's worth.
???

Here is the list I promised.

Dont expect miracles, I dug up this stuff from pretty deep in the closet here.
Some of that hardware is [bold]phenomenaly arcane[/bold] and requires some explaining, see further down for some interesting info.

By the way, these are freebies. Thats right. You pay for the shipping and thats it. I'm not using the stuff and this is its last chance for salvation from the bin one could say.

First off some MCA Cards.
If you dont know what these are right off the bat you DO NOT need them :P
These cards were pulled from a working model 9595a. I got tired of seeing the 50 pound clunkers so II gutted them. Sorry no planars or PSUs ( a.k.a. arc welders ).

IBM Pentium-66 Processor complex FRU 92F0120
IBM i486 DX2-50 Processir complex FRU 92F0161
IBM SVGA Video adapt. FRU 71G4877
IBM XGA-2 Video adapt. FRU Unknown
IBM Ethernet adapter FRU 48G7172 *1
Western Digital Ethernet adapt. FRU 64F0217 *2
IBM 16/4 Token Ring adapt. FRU 92G7690
3x IBM "Corvette" SCSI adapt. FRU 92F0160 *3
IBM "Anosprime" SCSI adapt. FRU 85F0063 *4
IBM "Passplay" SCSI RAID adapt. FRU P/N92F0335 *5
Adaptec AHA-1640 SCSI Controller Rev. E
Madge Smart 16/4 MC32 Token Ring adapt.
Cabletron Token Ring adapt. PN 9000340-04 *6

*1 - Still available retail, 160$ price tag :P. BNC "T" connector not included. Features UTP, BNC and mini-AUI ports.
*2 - 3 identical cards available. Still available retail, 160$ price tag :P. Features BNC and AUI ports.
*3 - 3 identical cards available. Can boot system. No cables.
*4 - Has SIMMs installed and BIOS chip.
*5 - Has SIMMs installed, comes with ONE Ultra-Mega-Rare original LVDE rainbow cable ( FRU 61G3523 ) that might be worth something to someone somewhere. Card is frickin huge.
*6 - No boot prom

Hard disks ( standard IDE kind :P )
1x Maxtor 90320D2 3.2 Gb Noisy ( VTOL jet taking off noisy )
1x Quantum EL51A013 5.1 Gb Fine
1x Quantum EL10A013 10.2 Gb Noisy
1x Maxtor 34098H4 40.0 Gb Noisy

Motherboard
1x Soyo SY-6VBA133 Slot-1 Not tested, dont have CPU

Some RAM
SODIMM
1x Toshiba THLY25N01BD80 32Mb, PC100
3x Toshiba THLY12N01A80 16Mbm PC100
1x Kingston KTT8000/32-CE Google it :P
1x Kingston KTT650/15 Google again

DIMMs
7x Kingston KTM0326/64-CE 64Mb, EDO
2x Cubig ... 64Mb, EDO
2x Siemens too long 64Mb, PC66
2x No-Brand ... 64Mb, PC100

Rare stuff
1x Pioneer DVR-S201 4Gb Authoring DVD-ROM
Now this is a thing of beauty. This is an External SCSI, self-contained PSU and fan AUTHOTRING DVD burner. Supports 4.1Gb DVD 1.1 format ( firmware ok ). This drive can NOT be used with the " general usage " DVD-R media we a re used to, it requires AUTHORING DVD-R media. This drive produces valid "Master" discs that can be industrialy replicated ( I.E. no copy protect ). If you have a home studio or wish to mass produce some DVD-media this might be for you.

As previously stated this is some pretty fancy ( and old! ) hardware... I admit one has to be in a pretty precise situation of need to require one of these items. If you want any ( or all ) of this lemme know and we can work out an agreement. For some reason I find ancient hardware...fascinating and I would gladly indulge anyone who shares this fascination.

I did fool around with the 95a's before you ask. I had them run Win NT4 ( ran like a charm ), Novell Netware 3.12 server and OS/2 of course.

Thats all folks

Edit : I almost always edit my posts dont I ? :P

I got an old E-machine, has everything but the hard drive for it. Would love to get an old HD for it, and start playing around with linux on it. :-) Anyone have one that would still work and decent price, let me know. :-) I'm a dummy when it comes to linux, so any advise on that end would be cool too. :-) (and I have been reading the Linux vs Windows thread btw)

Hi Jeremy!

Unless someone lives close to you I would buy a cheap hard drive, they are so inexpensive and you dont need a big one to run BOINC. how old is the E-Machine?
