Install BOINC, let it start up.
- If your firewall asks if Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe are allowed to play outside, let them.
- If you want to connect to the Seti project, go to Your Account.
- Change your password, type it in twice and hit the Change Password button.
Start Boinc Manager if it isn't open yet.
At the top menu bar, you see Projects (not the tab, but the menu bar), press it.
Select Attach to project.
- Type in, or copy & paste: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu
- Press Next.
- Press the radio button before "Use existing account"
- Fill in your email address (top of the page) and the password you just set at the Seti page.
- Press Next.

That should attach you to Seti.

If it does not, go to the Messages tab in Boinc Manager and copy the messages from there, then post them here for one of us to look over.

I have the same problem (failed to attach to BOINC client). Looks like a SETI server or database is FUBARed. I have been running the latest version without problems until today.

This is a problem that is very probably related to a Firewall. Boinc needs to be able to connect to Internet and Boinc Manager needs connection to Boinc.

For detailed explanation on this for Windows please see here.

I don`t think seti know what there doing all this should be working 100% why take away from people the old system that worked very well. There are some out here that DON`T want to run other projects only seti.It makes me think that if they can`t get this right are they getting the project right???.Seti should have kept the old system and brought in boinc for those who wanted it not to be given the choice is a slap in the face.Looks like the six computers I have will be going to a project that doesn`t use boinc. After find a drug that I was on there does not seem any worthwhile projects on the go that the money people don`t have a hand in.Will keep looking. Thanks for the help everyone.

Because the old system didn't work very well. See this page of the Wiki FAQ, which includes a post from one of the developers on why BOINC was necessary.
If you have specific questions, please let us know and we'll try to help.

Your wrong.I will explain,I know nothing about computers NOTHING.I need a project like the old seti or the best there has ever been find a drug all I do is download the project and it does everything for me.I NEVER had any trouble from the old seti, true I only did just over 500hrs work but done a year with a few computers at find a drug not ONE problem and never ran out of work. Now I am faced with having to put things here there and everwhere,do this and do that.I know a lot of the young people know all this stuff but I do not I am lost. When I hit trouble thats it for me.All I use a computer for is going on ebay and a bit of online shopping truth be I don`t know what URL stands for? all I know is it`s got something to do with the site address.I wonder how many people are like me? they may just go away and not bother to come on here but I like to help out and find it all interesting.I do this in my sons name as he will take it all over soon but he has only minimal interest and doesn`t live here so
can`t help me out.I really can`t spend the time at my time of life to learn all I need to or have anyone to show me but the point is I don`t think I should have to what do you think???.

I don't know the history of FindADrug, but SETI@Home could not continue as it was. The link I posted lists the major problems: technology, finances, staffing, the only reason it lasted through the last couple of years was that BOINC was in development, and that was its future.
Now I am faced with having to put things here there and everwhere,do this and do that.I know a lot of the young people know all this stuff but I do not I am lost.
Sorry, you don't get to play the age card around here. Not with the amount of grey hair that I wear. And, when the mother of this grey-haired person is running BOINC on her computer.
When I hit trouble thats it for me.All I use a computer for is going on ebay and a bit of online shopping truth be I don`t know what URL stands for? all I know is it`s got something to do with the site address.
Guess what? Unless you really want to, that's all you need to know about it. It's the site address.
I wonder how many people are like me? they may just go away and not bother to come on here but I like to help out and find it all interesting.I do this in my sons name as he will take it all over soon but he has only minimal interest and doesn`t live here so can`t help me out.
Probably lots. But most of them wouldn't have gotten this far.
I really can`t spend the time at my time of life to learn all I need to or have anyone to show me but the point is I don`t think I should have to what do you think???.
I think that, if you want to do this, we can walk you, step-by-step, through the process. It's hard for us to know from the first message, just how much direction a person needs. Some just need hints and they're off. Some, like you, would need the one step at a time direction. It can take time and patience on both ends, because we can't see your computer, we have to rely on what you tell us you see. But we've done it for others and they're crunching away. It's up to you if you want to continue the search for ETI.

For the first step, start BOINC and try and follow the directions in Ageless's post again. If it fails again, go to the messages tab. Click on the button that says "Copy all messages". Then open a reply message here and paste them into the reply box. We can take a look there, see what's happening and go on.

It's up to you. We'll be here.

Thanks MJ.I have done all that I have been told BIG thanks to them.I will now demonstrate to you my problems tried to copy and then to paste on here for you all to see but it won`t copy or paste all I get is nothing.I can get it to become all blue but when I use the right click button there is no copy or paste there?.When I click "copy all messages" it does nothing. I have windows 2000 pro on this computer but have tried my other computer that has windowsxp home on, both say the same thing "Failed to attach to project" I have lost count of the number of times I have tried.I have even re installed boinc at least 6 times and tried again.I have shut down zone labs and spywareblaster and nothing else is running still the same thing "Failed to attach to project" I have not made any mistakes done as I should have.I have also done localhost in select computer and it connects O.K. then says "Failed to attach to boinc manager" I have also started to get a box saying "work offline" or "try again" which means I have lost my internet connexion this only happens when I am trying to connect to a project? and it doesn`t always do it.I have also tried it all with Mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer still the same.

We'll do this one step at a time. When you clicked that button, that's all you needed to do. The messages were copied. The right click doesn't work there, that's why there are the
buttons. What you do next is to open a reply, click in the box, right click with the mouse and select "paste". The entries should come into the box.

The proxy dialog comes up if there is too long a delay in connecting to the project servers. This may be a step ahead, or not. Lets take a look at those entries from the Messages tab. 8-)

When you went back to version 4.45, there were some files left that identified themselves as version 5... Your choice now: install the current version 5.2.13 over what you've got now, or uninstall BOINC completely, delete the files and start again with 4.45. I recommend going to the version 5.2.13... in part because that's what I have on my computer, and I'll be better able to point you accurately. Plus, it's got some fixes in the communications protocols that may be helpful getting you started. 8-)

Ok, download the recommended verions, 5.2.13, and install it over your current 4.45 installation. Let me know how that goes, with the Message tab entries. I don't know about you, but I'm heading for bed! Tomorrow's going to be a very long day. 8-)
