I'm running SETI and Einstein at 50% each. I'm not having a problem uploadong completed work units for either SETI or Einstein, and I'm not having a problem downloading new work units for Einstein.

However, although the server status page tells me that everything is running, I'm having a problem downloading new work units for SETI.

Each time I try to get a new set of work units I get (in the message tab on BOINC Manager)Note: Not requesting new work or reporting results.

I'd be grateful if anyone has any idea's how to get around this problem.

Update to this problem.

I've clicked on No New Work for Einstein, and then clicked update on the SETI tab and workunits are now downloading.

Thanks

If BOINC says it does not request new work, then it has decided that it needs no new work. It this sense you have no download problem.

Let's see why BOINC could not request work:

  • You could have set the Seti project to 'no new work' (in projects panel).
  • BOINC could think that it must only crunch Einstein for a while to achieve your resource share settings (Read more in the BOINC Wiki under Long Term Debt and Short Term Debt).
  • BOINC could run in panic mode, fearing that otherwise it would miss a deadline (described in the same place as the above).

You can go to 'your account' -> 'general preferences' and set 'Connect to network...' to a higher value than the default 0.1 days (e.g. 1 day).
And then you can... be patient. BOINC work scheduler will straighten out things within some days, probably.

Thanks for the reply, but, SETI wasn't set to receive 'no new work'. There is no need for BOINC to run in panic mode, as the deadlines for the 4 Einstein work units I have are the 7th and 8th of January, and at present it's taking me about 6 hours to complete an Einstein work unit, and in my account, the 'Connect to network' is already set at 1 day.

Now, since I did the original post, I've set Einstein to receive no new work, and lo and behold received 12 SETI work units. I then suspended Einstein and since then SETI has crunched two work units and uploaded the results AND downloaded two new work units.

So that leads me to believe that it must be something to do with the long term debt.

Thanks again.

The way the percentages work is with a debt system. It seems the debt for SETI went too high, and so Einstein was the only one allowed to work. This straightens itself out after a while.

The 50% average works out over like a week, so sometimes it will run one of the projects longer than the other, then switch.

You may have gone into panic mode on SETI if they were getting close, ran them all down and then Einstein runtime needed to catch up. You may not know this happens, especially if you leave it alone (which is suggested).

If you are interested more in the debt stuff, BoincView is a nice program. I guess there are others, but the nice thing I like about BoincView is I can watch all the computers in my home, without a lot of trouble.

Good luck on things.

Hey Pooh Bear, where would I find BoincView?
