Profile: barbarossa

Personal background
From Switzerland, born 1950, 'handyman' (which includes running and supporting IT) in a trade association. Hobby astronomer since 1980 and co-founder in 1994 of one of todays most fabulous astro-websites: www.astroinfo.org.
Further interests include reading and discussing Tolkien (NOT the movie...), Swiss Yodelling (yep, I AM member of a Yodelling Club), cooking and eating (NO hamburgers), NO SPORTS, not even on TV.

My nick, barbarossa (redbeard), exists since the aera of mailboxes and interactive videotex in the 80ies. In fact it wasn't correct even then - the beard was black. But today it should rather be barbagrigia (greybeard) ;-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? - Why should we be alone in this universe? Even if earth's life should be the result of a chain of most improbable events, there are enough suns to have produced at least some other such chains.

2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? - I really dunno... Even if "they" are only a tenth as aggressive as mankind - goodnight... Fortunately it would take some weeks to reach earth :-)

3. Why do I run SETI@home? - Seti@home is a great project. For me it marked the start of DC back in 1999. With BOINC the Lab maintaines its claim to be at the very front of DC today.
