I keep receiving a message of communication deferred (this has been happening for a while). Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

I don't think that there is anything that you can do about it. It looks like you are just getting you machine going and caught SETI at a bad moment.

P.S. When you say while I hope you mean hours and not days.

Message 221242 - Posted: 25 Dec 2005, 14:44:20 UTC

Ive had this problem since 9th Dec - today i took a good look at the messages and as i had 2 previous large workloads of climate prediction - which were on my original version of boinc before seti changed over - i decided to reduce my cpu usage on climate, then i actually aborted one work unit of climate prediction. I then requested an update on seti and hey presto! the first time in weeks, i got a work unit for Seti to crunch!
Seti has always been my priority - I didnt really get any work done with climate predict before i downloaded the seti version of boinc. since then and primarily downloading boinc for seti - Climate predict has chugged nicely away but not seti! I find that the climate predict work units are huge! and so seem to be taking up so much usage and thats probably why im having the probs with seti.
Is there any way to reduce the size of the climate units i download??? It seems a shame to have to abort their units in order to get any seti work done.

This is a bit of a problem if you are using a dual core or HT.
If you run only CPDSN and Seti, and when Seti is down for a while, then BOINC gets a second WU of CPDN.
I had to do the same as you, Annie, some weeks ago. Unfortunately you can't choose the size of WUs you are getting. But there is a workaround: Just set CPDN to 'no new work', as long as you have one of it's WUs crunching.

Yes thanks for this - the only prob im having now is seti has downloaded 2 wu's which its crunching but Climate seems to have stopped with the message 'preempted'. Not sure what this means, couldnt find it on the messages site?
What i really want to do is be able to run 1 wu of each climate and seti at the same time. Its set to 50/50 - but the climate unit is so huge it seems to not be able to cope with both??
Is there an easy way round this that im missing?
Thanks

That's something you cannot influence directly. BOINC manages to do by itself, trying to fulfil your resource share settings. Just let it crunch - it'll straighten out. Indirectly - of course - your influence is by setting the resource shares.

BTW: No need to hide your computers. Others can't see delicate data such as IP address or computer name. Try with mine. But unhidden computers sometimes can help us determine a problem.

I've been having the same problem, I just got boinc on this particular computer and am going to start seti. For the last 2hours all its been doing is saying, "communication deferred" then delaying again for another 10mins. I had boinc with seti running on my old computer I remember it working fine and dont remember any of this sort of thing.

Heres the messages:
27/12/2005 14:11:14|SETI@home|Requesting 17280 seconds of new work

Is this just because seti has nothing for me to analyse at this time... which I seriously doubt.

So, from what I've heard so far I just have to sit this one out and wait. k?

I think someone is down there working on this. If you look at the Server Stats page there is something askew (numbers are missing).

Leave the software alone, as it's meant to be. It's not meant to be micromanaged. I am sure they will get things rolling again, and probably post a little news about it.

My problem is fixed, I found that everytime I added a new computer this would happen. It seems that the seti site needs to update and spread its data to be able to incorporate your new computer into their system. I always find that this clears after leaving the computer connected to the internet for a few hours overnight and that once these first few hours are clear the seti site will always have something ready for as soon as the computer has finished on that result.
