would info on who connects via which ISP help?
incase it's a problem with a major ISP, or a backbone?

Yes but from the diversity of the responses it's not a specific ISP. I don't think it's with a Peering Company, because most of the peering connections are multiple OC-3 or OC-12 connections. That leave the local Cogent loop and Berkley itself.

Money at this point is Berkeley.. All dem classic people coming to terms.. :)

Had to change the title :)

Everybody is getting them now and Berkely is on it.. Lets give them a chance, but keep feeding me the data it has been extremely helpful

It seems there's a major network problem somewhere in the western U.S. In addition to the BOINC connection problems I'm having some major problems with accessing eBay pages. I wonder if the level3-cogent peering dispute has started up again.

apparently they've reached a "temporary" agreement, not heard any change since then

Sorry. I live in Switzerland and I have the same problem (500 or I/O err).
It seems to be a global problem.

Wolfie,

sorry for the slightly off-topic, but since it seems most usefull info on the current problem at Berkeley is gathered in this thread, I figured I might add this as well.

from this thread in the Windows Q&A it seems like there were some database connection problems last night, could this be related to the assimilator backing up and hindering the up/downloads?

I can add this detail.

Looking at "Tranfer" tab in Boinc manager, I can see the result starting with 0.00% in the "progress" column, than 2-3% for some seconds and finally it stops with 100% with a new retry scheduled. In theese cases I get the 500 error.
If Progress is always blocked on 0.00%, I get I/O error.
Bye

Good catch. That is a big help.

=========

I hope to help us more telling that in the case of 500 error I see, for a while,
at the end of the fault transfer, something like:
Progress ---- Size
105.26% ---- 14.38/13.67

Bye,
Franz

Money at this point is Berkeley.. All dem classic people coming to terms.. :)

Yo Bro - I are one of them thar! ;^)

Growing pains like you won't believe, eh? Finally got this live Saturday afternoon and now everyone's climbing aboard.

I did a tracert from Philly Verizon.net out through several sites on the West Coast, and noticed that Cogent't times are roughly two to three times longer than AT&T or Verio. But I too think the bottleneck is between Cogent and Berkley.

Time to grab some popcorn and settle back. Thanks for your support and help.

Mikey.

I have not seen a 500 error but I keep getting the I/O error. I have 2 computers running and a bunch of packets to be uploaded. This is the first error I recieved

12/4/2005 7:25:59 AM||Couldn't connect to hostname [setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu]
12/4/2005 7:25:59 AM|SETI@home|Temporarily failed upload of 24my03aa.11260.33360.290910.150_2_0: system I/O

I am in Central time zone

I also run the rosetta@home on my good computer and I have had no errors with this one

A few of us are trying to track the cause of 500 errors.
It appears that it may have something to do with MTU sizes.

To get to the source of this I have several questions.

1. What type of connection do you have to your ISP?
(dial-up, DSL, Cable, Other [specify other]

DSL (384k/256k)(1/4 of a T1)

2. What equipment are you using to access your ISP?
(cable modem [manufacturer, mode], DSL Modem, Other)

DSL Modem

3. Are you running other applications that could consume bandwidth? (bit torrent, win mx, napster, etc)

I do have a TeamSpeak server but it does not use much bandwidth as most of the users are only connected from about noon until about 2 am.

4. Are you connected directly to your cable/dsl modem or is there a router or switch in line?

Linksys 4 port broadband firewall Router

5. Are you willing to share a network trace with one of us?

Yes here it is doing a trace to setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu

I hope to help us more telling that in the case of 500 error I see, for a while,
at the end of the fault transfer, something like:
Progress ---- Size
105.26% ---- 14.38/13.67

Bye,
Franz

================
New details:
the starting size in a "500 error transfer" is always "0.28/nn.nn KB" while uploading. This number (0.28) is fixed untill the end. Progress can vary from 2% to 3% but Size in fixed.

Bye
Franz

Wolfie,

sorry for the slightly off-topic, but since it seems most usefull info on the current problem at Berkeley is gathered in this thread, I figured I might add this as well.

from this thread in the Windows Q&A it seems like there were some database connection problems last night, could this be related to the assimilator backing up and hindering the up/downloads?

Actually yes. I have a theory I passed along to Dr. A and crew. If I am right and they impliment the change I think they should make we should be back in business soon. Of course there will be a major backup as all those crunched WU's get uploaded. I think my current count is around 20 waiting to upload.
