Message 196958 - Posted: 27 Nov 2005, 20:51:30 UTC

While I was having a time-out error with BOINC 5.2.7 when I wanted to attaching to SAH, I've downloaded and installed 5.2.12, hoping I would be able to participate.

When I tried, I got that :

I had an issue of this type some days ago. It cleared up as I made my proxy server (I'm running a home LAN with an Allegro Surf proxy) be a bit more generous in letting pass requests.

500 normally means that the dialogue with the server was established but the server was not able to send a WU (mostly as is was too busy).

You may also want to try with entering a proxy in BOINC. Try this list.

A 500 error is a standard internet error (like a 404) which means "internal server error"... which makes me think it's something on Berkeley's end. Could you run a tracert in Dos to the project url and post the results here?

You are now the fourth person experiencing this. I've contacted a developer. I await his reply. Many think this has to do with the secure transmission of your password/key to berkeley. It makes sense, the key/password is transmitted via HTTPS (secure)while all other traffic is HTTP (not secure). some say port 443 must be open for this attachment process. I'm trying to piece this one together.

I've done this and got no change. I repeat : SAH is the only project to have the problem... Strange, no?

one user just reported that they get what you see in your log, if there is a missing number or spaces in the front or back of the key/password. If you're copy and pasting, make sure you're not missing a number and that there are no spaces. Let me know.

I use the automatic feature with a already created account : I enter manually all characters and I do not pu any space.
When I look to the file created by BOINC while trying to contact SAH, there's no space in it.
When I compare it to the key sent by email : there are identical.
When I stop BOINC, put this copy file in the BOINC directory and restart BOINC, I get the same logs.

THanks for trying.

I'll post back when anyone else comes up with a plan. Just 4 users are affected out of 20K + newly attached users. Hmmmm. Just what can they have in commmon, that is different from everyone else? that's the question.

Message 198439 - Posted: 29 Nov 2005, 12:16:54 UTC

I just saw this post from Tigher:

I mailed the devs on this one. I have someone who can talk to all projects except seti using their lan and router. Take out the router and connect direct and they can talk to seti as well. Put it back in and they cannot talk to seti anymore. Weird!.

I asked the devs for what changes since 4.4x to 5.x.x in terms of tcp. I have looked at the packet traces for this guy and tcp checksum errors are being generated on his PC/LAN somewhere. UCB just responds accordingly with dup acks and/or tcp retrans and /or lost segment messages. A 500 error typically follows after the server gets fed up with partial data and then times out. Interstingly only the initial syn to the servers is not impaired with a checksum problem. I have asked Jeff C for the apache error list as we may be able to get closer with that as to what the server or fastcgi is complaining about.

I had this guy checking his hardware top to bottom but nothing has resolved this. At the moment I theorise that something in boinc is affecting the tcp stack somehow - a WAG for sure but I cannot see why the stack should be fine one minute and not the next.

There are two more of these btw on boinc forums; they too have connected directly and got over the problem but cannot connect through LAN/router facilities. I see there are few here at seti too - 6/7 people - Cannot be a coincidence.

Changes since 5.2.12

* Localization updates.
* Network communication failure page added which describes basic ways to resolve common networking issues.
* Fixed a timing issue where the manager would look for the password file before the client actually created one.

You might try an earlier version like Boinc 4.72. You must uninstall the one you have before installing this.

I didn't told it before (sorry about it) but I too have a local network and a router.
I've tried the 5.2.13 : no change : error 500.

Can anyone try to attach to another BOINC project, please?

I bet it will work first thing, thus that the whole error 500 part is a Seti thing.
