Below, instruction worked for me, too. I thought I were going mad, but closing down BOINC Manager competly and being loged in worked Great TONY YOU RULE! I was about in tears trying to figure this out. I did what you said in this reply and it popped right up. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU from a now NOT confused User!
Yes, it works! THANKS! Just one addition to the instructions: Make sure when you exit the BOINC manager that you exit it totally, that is from the quick launch tray at the bottom of the screen. Then when re-launching BOINC manager do so from the START menu => BOINC ----- THANKS! Terry N.
|

Dave, also check in your firewall to see if BOTH Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe have "full internet access". I saw you said they were off, but they will need to be ON eventually |

Anand, you need to choose your localhost first. Go to File->Select Computer and put in 'localhost' I got this to work last week, but now it refuses to work for me. I get the message: "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client. Would you like to try to connect again?" It never connects. I have even tried with the latest client. 5.2.13. Anyone else seeing this? |

It's worth pointing out that if you have the invalid password error at boinc startup and you ignore it and try to attach to a project you'll get the proxy popup and won't be able to get rid of it. me@rescam.org |

Anand, you need to choose your localhost first. Go to File->Select Computer and put in 'localhost' ********************************************8 I say "Uncle!" I've downloaded the latest version of BOINC, I've chosen "localhost", I've got a SETIATHOME Classic password AND Account Key, and I'm still unable to connect to the SETI project. - Dave |

Anand, you need to choose your localhost first. Go to File->Select Computer and put in 'localhost' I have the exact same problem and have not been able to resolve it as of yet. Very frustrating... using 5.2.13 also. -- Howard |

Anand, you need to choose your localhost first. Go to File->Select Computer and put in 'localhost' Okay, the resolution is as follows: uninstall BOINC, reboot the computer and then reinstall it. That worked for me and will likely work for you, too. Best of luck! -- Howard |

I have tried to attach the project after following all the steps six times! Everytime I get the answer that http://setiathome.berkeley.edu is NOT the URL??? Do pardon me for saying so BUT your BOINC appears to be an unmitigated disaster! Please fix this. I would not like to be excluded from this project for any reason out of my control! I have been very patient and will keep trying again AND again! You got it??? I have removed BOINC, reinstalled it; after downloading a fresh version on 5 Dec 2005, tried again - NIX! AND again today 7 Dec! Hahahahaha! Boys & girls we are having real FUN! Are WE NOT!!??!! |

Believe me, nobody's having fun, right now. Have you been to the main-page of the SETI@Home and took a gander at the latest NEWS? Just for grins, you should take a gander at the Technical News link embeded in the head sup there. I know that's not helpin' ya out right now with YOUR problem (and you've been very patient). But all I'm saying is that SETI is having problems right now (above and beyond what you've been dealing with so far), they've got a lot on their plate and sometimes things don't work out as well as one expects. Do you use a computer system at work? Ever live through a system upgrade/change/revision/modification? How many time do they go w/out a hitch. My point is that things don't work flawlessly in the real-world by experts, and they certainly don't work in academia either by those learning the ropes. Perhaps it may not be such a bad thing, to perhaps consider the merits of signing up for some other project until everything shakes out. For perhaps one good reason being demonstrated, should any one or several of the projects have problems akin to what SETI is going through right now, then there's always something to crunch. I can't believe that out of 8 projects, nothing but SETI is worthy to devote idle CPU cycles to. For crying out loud. What's wrong with devoting idle CPU cycles to something actually practical like searching for a cure to some disease, something that may actually have a potential applicability to oneself personally. If a therapeutic agent was discovered out of United Devices Anthrax project, and there's an anthrax bio-terror attack, that's going to be a whole lot more useful than crunching radio-telescope signals for little green men, donchyathink? I'm not belittling the SETI project, just that there may be other more pragmatic projects out there. Should you see the wisdom in that, you'll find that BOINC works about as flawlessly as you can imagine. I'd lay 5:7 odds you'd be crunching within 10 minutes on some project should you take the initiative to enroll in one other than SETI right now, this very instant. Give SETI a day or two to settle down, and then try to get attache again. |

I have tried to attach the project after following all the steps six times! Is this still the message you're getting? It says"http://setiathome.berkeley.edu is NOT the url" or does it say "account not found", or "something more like this URL doesn't belong to a boinc based project"? |

A work around for the current server difficulties. 1) If you have one computer attached, copy the account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml file to the one that is not attached. Stop and start BOINC. 2) Otherwise, the file should look like: <account> <master_url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/</master_url> <authenticator>yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy</authenticator> <project_name>SETI@home</project_name> <host_venue>work</host_venue> </account> With the contents of the authenticator tag replaced by the user ID in the email. I'm having the same issue and this fix didn't help with out. Does the software require a certain port be open on the firewall to communicate? Or is there something else someone has come up with? |

I'm having the same issue and this fix didn't help with out. Does the software require a certain port be open on the firewall to communicate? Or is there something else someone has come up with? Source port and destination port for each link are the same. BOINC.exe -> Project server. 443 and 80. BOINCMgr.exe and BOINCCmd.exe -> BOINC.exe. 1043 (prefered) or 31416 same port both ends. EDIT BOINC.scr probably needs the same setup as BOINCMgr.exe BOINC WIKI |

try this: Thnks, I had been trying for a while and was about to give up, The trick is to login to your account first then connect to the project with BOINC manager. Now if I could just get some work todo. |

I installed to BOINC and tried to attach to a project nearly as month ago because I kenw that SEti@home was going away. I couldn't get it to attach to anything. I've tried regularly since, but it never works. During the attach to Project wizard, I get a Network Communications Failure. It appears that there might be bad interaction between the BOINC software and my Norton Internet Security Firewall. However, if I ture the Norton Firewall off it still doesn't work. I don't have this problem with ANY other program. Browsers, EMail and dozens of other programs can access the internet just fine. It appears that BOINC NEVER sends anything over my dial-up connection as it tries to attach to a project. So, I have been unable to process any WU's since the 15th. Is there any chance that this will be fixed or should I just give up on Seti@home and BOINC? |

I've logged over 11,000 hours on SETI using the classic. Tried to follow the instructions and set up a new BOINC account, and transfer it over, no way!!! It keeps asking for a Proxy setting, I just don't know enough about computers to know what it wants. Guess I'll be dropping out, I don't have time for this. I was more than willing to keep my three computers (broadband cable, router) running SETI before, but I just don't have the time to try to figure this all out. Since I followed all the instructions and it won't connect, I guess I am through. Too bad, I think it is a good project. Merry Christmas all, WillyP |

I'm using boinc v.5.2.13 and it appears that boinc manager and boinc.exe have to be run separately. in order to upload or download projects boinc.exe has to be running. boinc.exe when it is running looks like a dos shell program. |

@WillyP: The proxy dialog comes up if there is too long a delay in connecting to the project servers. This could be at the server, because of many new users connecting and servers being involved in the database merges, or it could be on the net, just general internet traffic. There are different suggestions, depending on which problem it is. What results do you get when you do a tracert to setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu ? Please copy the results of this test into a reply here, and we can see what's happening with your connection. @mikesharp: BOINC has as its main components, boinc.exe, which is the Daemon that does the work of scheduling, uploading, downloading, reporting and such for BOINC. The Manager, boincmgr.exe, is the GUI that lets you know what's happening. The manager is not required for BOINC to work. It doesn't start up at all if you're running as a service, unless you manually start it. And, there's a third-party substitute called BOINCView, which many people think highly of. It has some more functions, like result logging, that some of the stats-hungry users like. MJ |
