I use a cable modem with a router and don't use proxy (or let the browser automatically detect). Boinc Manager keeps asking for proxy settings while I use none and can not attach to the project. I only thought Microsoft wrote such software!!! |

You can find the answer on your problem here. Read the News at the homepage Have a look at the Technical News Look if your question is not answered at the Boinc Wiki Best greetings, Thierry |

After you install the software, it attempts to find an internet connection, if that fails for some reason, then it assumes you are behind a proxy and prompts for the proper information. This can happen if the servers are pounded with requests and cannot answer all of them in a timely fashion. Sometimes waiting a little bit, and the issue might resolve itself. If not, please let us know and we can try to help you further. |

I'm having the same issue and this fix didn't help with out. Does the software require a certain port be open on the firewall to communicate? Or is there something else someone has come up with? Richard A. |

Or is there something else someone has come up with? both Boinc.exe AND Boincmgr.exe need to have "full internet access", boinc uses port 80, 1043 and 31416, but I think you just need 80 open "and available" not reserved by another program. |

No. I'm logged into Seti but I keep getting the proxy question. I gave Boinc full access through the firewall but still no go. ?????? |

I too found my BOINC Manager asking me for Proxy and SOCKS information despite not using either. I'm running on a WLAN so I ensured the router firewall allowed port 80 to be used for outbound HTTP requests from BOINC. Secondly, I used BlackICE application protection and ensured the latest baseline was in place after installing BOINC. Once I'd done this I no longer got asked for my proxy/socks details. HOWEVER...when I next opened up BOINC, I selected File->Select Computer and entered "localhost" which worked ok (no need to enter the password-it's done for you). When I then connected to the project I got prompted for my email address and password (finally!!) but I then had to change my email address and then my password for the BOINC manager to connect to my account. Not the easiest of configurations to complete, but I got there in the end. Now I just need to figure out why BOINC is showing my communications as being deferred..... |

I'm having the same issue and this fix didn't help with out. Does the software require a certain port be open on the firewall to communicate? Or is there something else someone has come up with? Just a minor correction Tony. BOINC Manager needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416. BOINC Screensaver needs to be able to open outbound connections to either 1043 or 31416. BOINC needs to open an inbound connection to either 1043 or 31416, and an outbound connection to port 80 for downloads and uploads of workunits, results, and science packages. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. No. I'm logged into Seti but I keep getting the proxy question. Can you post the messages you get in the BOINC Manager messages tab here? Which version of BOINC are you using? I just posted two builds today which resolve two different types of connection issues. Could you try the latest version out and see if we are making any progress? Thanks in advance. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

OK - this finally worked for me. (from BigH): "HOWEVER...when I next opened up BOINC, I selected File->Select Computer and entered "localhost" which worked ok (no need to enter the password-it's done for you)..." But I must protest this lame aspect of the abuser interface. I found no mention of the magic 'localhost' in the help pages. I wonder how many people would have given up in frustration. try this: |

Steve, the previouse poster Rom Walton, is the man who wrote this program, so protest away. If there's anyone to protest to (that might be able to change anything) he's it. welcome to boinc tony |

I tried downloading the new software... it's even worse. Disappears and when checked in task manager memory usage is unchanging at 4224k after 10 minutes. (and listed as not responding) Based on the messages in this thread, I have: Set up port forwarding on 80, 1043, 31416 (to my NAT ip) Set up exceptions in windows firewall for boinc, boincmgr, and boinccmd (just for laughs) TURNED OFF windows firewall to rule out that being the culprit Logged in using my username and newly created password, leaving the page open I even tried firmware upgrading my router AND setting this machine up as the DMZ. Even after the program finally DOES respond, I cannot click on projects and simply add it (I always get the proxy server prompt) I have spent several HOURS trying to get this to work (and I am an IT Manager) This is not going to encourage the average end-user to participate further. I understand the need for a single management program to handle all projects, but was it really necessary to do away with the original seti@home client? (because so far, this is looking like a colossal failure and waste of time) Sorry... but I'm not very pleased right now. Wes Jordan |

Try the latest BOINC version for Windows 5.2.10: # Changes since 5.2.9 * Win: Fixes a BOINC Manager connection issue when the manager is waiting on a firewall for the all clear. This generally happens after a reboot. # Changes since 5.2.8 * Win: Fixes the 'connection failed' message when another program is using the BOINC communication port. And thank you for your patience so far. |

I reset all equipment, completely uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled... and it now appears to be working. (Seti-window is now showing processing) I notice even though I migrated my account (had to have them retrieve my old password) and it does show (my time processed thus far) when I log into my account, there is nothing showing in the new Seti window under total credit. It's probably minimal compared to some of the members here, but I'd still like to carry it over. Is there anything I can do to accomplish that? (or will it happen automatically as of December 15th?) Thanks for your assistance :) Wes |

I notice even though I migrated my account (had to have them retrieve my old password) and it does show (my time processed thus far) when I log into my account, there is nothing showing in the new Seti window under total credit. The total credit are the one for Boinc/Seti, completely independent from Seti Classic. Credit will come up once you returned a WU and after validating of it. Returning a result a 2 step process: 1. uploading a result which is returning the found science data 2. reporting the result which is claiming your credit. Everything about credit can be found in the Boinc Wiki here. |

I (probably) had the same problem as Anand - getting stuck in the proxy dialog. I followed up on a suggestion that perhaps the version needed updating - I had 5.2.8 (which was the version I got directed to when I went to change my SETI Classic to BOINC), and I saw that 5.2.10 was available. So I upgraded, and this time the setup wizard worked the way I assume it should - either way, I didn't get the proxy dialog, and I did manage to attach to the project, and (I think) started a work unit. And then my system crashed, so I rebooted, ran SCANDISK (I have 98SE, the last version of MS Windows I shall run at home - the next OS will be something LINUX-based), restarted, and got an error dialog: "A required .DLL file, LIBEAY32.DLL, was not found." So clicked OK, opened the BOINC manager, and lo! - no work unit, no attached project, and when I try to attach to SETI, I get the dratted proxy dialog. I share the frustration of some of the posters here - at this stage in the game, this should *not* be happening. As a former systems manager, sysadmin and software engineer (sometimes all at the same time :)) I don't think I have ever seen a transition like this go smoothly, but you always hope that one day it'll happen... So now I have to go find out what happened to LIBEAY32, and whether it got deleted as part of the upgrade to 5.2.10, or whether there's a 5.2.11 lurking out there, just waiting to solve my problem... |
