Im trying to install boinc on a new computer we have on the network in work.
But all I keep getting is incorrect password and the network connection icon on the bottom shows as disconnected.
I allready have boinc running on another computer in this network we no problems but that was before all this stuff about network / proxy servers and passwords was added.
My home computer went through a spasm of not wanting to connect when I upgraded boinc to the latest version last night but agreed to start eventually after a few restarts and I have no idea why.
I also cannot delete all the files in boinc after uninstalling. A couple of them say they are being used by another programme even though nothing at all is running. A reboot doesn't help they still remain.
Why do we continue to make it difficult to use boinc ? I can see us looseing a lot of crunchers.

Go into the boinc installation directory and open the file named "gui_rpc_auth.cfg". Delete the random string in the first line. Restart the BOINC daemon. Done :)

Click here for more information on how/why this is the way it is done now. And while you are there, take a look around. There is a lot of helpful information there (in the BOINC wiki).

If you cannot delete the BOINC folder because files are being used by another process, then BOINC and/or the science application are probably still running.
Have you looked at Tash Manager to see what processes are running?

If BOINC is still running when you upgrade, you should expect it not to work correctly.

This computer has never had boinc before.
After uninstall 2 files still remain in boinc directory stdout.txt and stdoutdae.txt
They will not let me delete them as being used by another programme.
Task manager says NOTHING running
file "gui_rpc_auth.cfg is not in the folder.
You shoudn't assume I upgraded whilst boinc still running I have never done that.

It's more probably an XP problem than it is BOINC. Something or someone is still using the files, which can be the file indexer, someone on the network bugging your attempts etc. Use a tool to de-block the blocking.

If the gui_rpc_auth.cfg is not present, it is created when boinc.exe is started. If there is no such file in your directory then boinc.exe hasn't been started. Usually it is started automatically when you start up the BOINC manager program.

Task manager says NOTHING running

Then you are looking at the wrong tab. You need to look at the "Processes" tab, not the "Applications" tab. There are always windows processes running even if you aren't using any programs at the moment so there should always be SOMETHING listed. Look for a "boinc.exe" in the "Image Name" column.

Your quite correct I did'nt look at "processes".
Too late now though as the boinc folder deleted when asked this morning.
So when I get the chance i will try again to install

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help.

To be quite honest at the moment I don't care cuz we (Australia that is) have
just beaten Uruguay in a penalty shoot out and were on our way to germany to play in the world cup.
