In April 2010, the Sun produced one of the largest eruptive prominences ever seen. Pictured above, the prominence erupted in only a few hours and was captured in movie form by NASA’s twin Sun-orbiting STEREO satellites. A quiescent solar prominence is a cloud of hot solar gas held above the Sun’s surface by the Sun’s magnetic field. Unpredictably, however, prominences may erupt, expelling hot gas into the Solar System via a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). As pictured here, many Earths would easily fit under the expanding ribbon of hot gas. Although somehow related to the Sun’s changing magnetic field, the energy mechanism that creates and sustains a Solar prominence is still a topic of research.

This festive NASA Hubble Space Telescope image resembles a holiday wreath made of sparkling lights. The bright southern hemisphere star RS Puppis, at the center of the image, is swaddled in a gossamer cocoon of reflective dust illuminated by the glittering star. The super star is ten times more massive than our sun and 200 times larger.

NASA has revealed several stunning new images, including a new “hand of God” photo captured by its powerful “black hole hunting” Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuStar) that is uniquely capable of seeing “the highest-energy X-rays.”

Point of order; we cannot see x-rays so 99 and 44/100% of the pictures are "Photoshopped". Sorry, carry on.

Alpha Centauri over Saturn rings.

The distance from Earth to Alpha Centauri, compared to the distance from Earth to Saturn, is like the distance from Earth to Saturn compared to the distance traveled by Columbus in 1492.

Ever feel like you're being watched? This might be why..

ESO's Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy, also known as VISTA, captured this unusual view of the Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), a planetary nebula located 700 light-years away.
The Universe doesnt always give you what you want... But it ALWAYS gives you what you need.
