Message 198014 - Posted: 28 Nov 2005, 23:40:40 UTC - in response to Message 196714.

Seti@Home Users:

If you follow these broadly labeled steps, and let me know where your problems begin (as they surely will), I will do my best to lend a hand.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

0) completely disregard the confusing "BOINC users manual" (a vital step)
1) download the BOINC software
2) install the BOINC software
3) activate your BOINC account with Seti@Home (myself, I missed this step a few times)
4) reboot your computer (even though the application does not instruct so)
5) start the BOINC program (it should start up automatically after rebooting)
6) attach BOINC to your Seti@Home project

. . . . .to do this:
--------6a) select "Project" from the menu at the top
--------6a) enter "http://setiathome.berkeley.edu" for your project link

7) provide your Seti@Home sign-on information that the BOINC program requests

. . . . .if you are not required to enter this information (above), then STOP - either:
--------7a) you have not yet activated your account with BOINC (because you weren't prompted to), or
--------7b) you are being asked for Proxy connection info (incorrectly)

8) follow subsequent instructions

Designate where your problems begin (using the respective number from above) and I will try to assist you.
My guess is either (7a) or (7b) are your issues. In any case, let me know where your problems start and I will help you through the mess as best I can.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope I can be of assistance. I was very frustrated with my initial installation of this program. I still am put out with the ill-designed, ill-equipped "BOINC users manual". It is a "BIONIC users headache", with all its superfluous links (don't take that link) and unrelated information. Since I managed to get through the confusion myself, I would like to lend a hand, if I can, to my fellow Seti@Home users. NOTE: I am merely another user - I am not help desk, nor am I affiliated with BOINC in any way other than through my humble little Seti@Home account. (So please go easy on me - I'm just trying to help.)

How do you activate your BOINC Seti@home account?

Activating your BOINC Seti@Home account

This is a good question since the BOINC application does not prompt you to do this after installing the program. Follow these instructions and let me know if you have any problems.

a) take this link: Seti@Home Account
b) check your email for the account KEY
c) follow the instructions in the email (taking a link from it)

Hope that helps!

Joseph,

I have followed your helpful instructions, but after an hour I am getting very frustrated - I do not get a prompt for a key, but for my email address and password....I have no idea what my password is - which would be why I have the Key.....any suggestions???

After creating a new account, with the hope of transferring my exiting "Classic" account, I have searched my emails for the last several days, and cannot find a reply from BOINC. Therefore, I do not have an account key. I attempted to recreate an account and got a reply that my email already exists. To make things worse, I do not have, nor can I find in user_info.sah, an existing password for my Classic account that is recognised by the system. I am not about to loose over 21,000 hours logged with SETI over the last few years. Didn't anyone run this conversion process through a focus group of real users before going live with it????

Larry, when you ran classic it created several files:

Key, lock, outfile, pid, result header, setiathome-3.08.i386-winnt cmdlne, state, temp, user info, version, and work unit.

It is the Bolded one that you need to plug into the password extractor. You can find it with the other classic files using explorer, right click on it, pick "open with" then choose "notepad". when notepad opens the file, the copy the entire contents with a click and drag, then past it into the box on the website. Click submit and then it'll spit out your password

Message 199851 - Posted: 1 Dec 2005, 4:18:14 UTC - in response to Message 199183.

I did find the user_info.sah file and copied it into the form and submitted it. I tried this several times before sending my first message seeking help. The response I got did not list an email account and the password listed was not valid when I pasted it into the field on the account transfer form. After submitting the form I instantly got a message stating "bad password for Classic account. If I could find a way to generate the new account key, I might be able to transfer my classic accouint to the new one. Is there a way to get a copy of the confirmation email I was supposed to have recieved? I even went through my deleted messages, but to no avail. I never got it. Is there a file in the new system that would generate the account key as the user info file was supposed to generate the classic password?

The only way to save your workunit completion and hours is to buy a certificate at

Otherwise, on December 15th it is all deleted and gone forever.
Unless someone can write a patch to convert the old client data into "cobblestones", the new format bionic uses.

NO, NO and again NO! The credits are NOT GONE! They're in everyone's profile under "Seti Classic workunits". Statistics pages like BoincSynergy do take care of it (see my sig below).

My two cents.

In the last 8 days, seti has added 54,000 new puters (hosts), and 38K new users. The number of people with trouble is relatively small, unless you're one of the later.

We Help Desk people are Volunteers, not berkeley employees. We are offering our personal time to try and help out new users. Boinc and Seti combined have less than a dozen employees. Then we have a dozen volunteer developers (coders), 30+ volunteer testers (see my tag), and then hundreds of regular users in the NC, Science, and Cafe fora that can help as well.

do you need help?

That's an interesting idea, but I am not that interested in glorifying the cpu time I have logged onto SETI@home over the past three or four year (over 21,000 hours). I would just like to transfer these hur to the new system. I have now sent two messages to the volunteers at the help desk, describing the problems I am having (no Classic password and no Boinc authentication keyu, even though I now have a BOINC account). So far
