As a very recent switch over, myself, I kind of agree...

But, it does work. You just need to go to your preferences, (which are available in "your account" above), and set the contact frequency to couple of days.

The, update the seti project, and leave it alone, over night. When you come back, it should have a stack of work units waiting, and one being worked on.

The servers and such do seem very flaky at times, which is why you want to get a bunch of WUs stacked up.

HTH,
Don

When you first start it should download a work unit. Then your computer should process it and send back the results. Then it should send you another one to start working on. To do the same as increase your cache as in SETI Classic try the following;

It's in the "YOUR ACCOUNT" at the top of this page. Then click on the "View or edit general preferences". Then "Edit preferences" at the bottom. Then you can change "connect to network about every" to something higher. The maximum is 10 days.

"Connect to network about every" sounds sort of misleading. Actually it caches more work but it still reports and connects each time a work unit is finished.

Still though something looks funny since your computer hasn't sent back the first work unit yet. Has it been a long time since it started?

Do your BOINC Manager messages look sort of like this( mine are sort of different because of the optimized client)when it starts?

7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM||Starting BOINC client version 4.45 for windows_intelx86
7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM||Data directory: C:Program FilesBOINC
7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM|SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform
7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM|SETI@home|Computer ID: 818571; location: home; project prefs: default
7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM||General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 2005-06-13 22:20:01)
7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM||General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults
7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM||Remote control not allowed; using loopback address
7/5/2005 1:06:43 AM|SETI@home|Resuming computation for result 10ja05aa.13638.30240.990892.213_2 using setiathome version 4.11

P.S. Try something like one day or so until you see if it is going to operate correctly. If you find you need to remove BOINC and do a fresh install it may lose all of your work units.

May be running to hot, keep Laptop elevated and have a fan blowing on it... Boinc is 100% CPU use and generates lots of heat....

Admitidly I am a bit frustrated. Actually I was expecting some help and I got some. No one seemed to notice that I inadvernatly called Boinc, Bionic. I still don't have a work unit, but it does acknowlede the one I sent in so maybe there is hope.

You might want to consider joining a couple of other BOINC projects. Sometimes one project is having trouble giving out work, but others are having no trouble.

Ben, You should have gotten a work unit by now. Did you change many of the default settings when you set things up?

If I go to "YOUR ACCOUNT" at the top of the page and then click on "view and edit general preferences" mine look like this;

processor usage
Do work while computer is running on batteries?
(matters only for portable computers) no
Do work while computer is in use? yes
Do work only between the hours of (no restriction)
Leave applications in memory while preempted?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') no
Switch between applications every
(recommended: 60 minutes) 60 minutes
On multiprocessors, use at most 2 processors
Disk and memory usage
Use no more than 100 GB disk space
Leave at least 0.1 GB disk space free
Use no more than 50% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use no more than 75% of total virtual memory
Network usage
Connect to network about every
(determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days) 10 days
Confirm before connecting to Internet?
(matters only if you use a modem) no
Disconnect when done?
(matters only if you use a modem) yes
Maximum download rate: no limit
Maximum upload rate: no limit
Use network only between the hours of
Enforced by versions 4.46 and greater (no restriction)
Skip image file verification?
Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example).
Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC. no

Edit preferences

P.S. I noticed it is taking a while for your computer to complete a work unit. Maybe you should set "Connect to network about every" to 4 days and see if that works.

Yes, I did get a work unit and it's plugging away. I have a pretty slow computer that I turn off from time to time so it takes a while to complete a unit. I'll set it for four days. Thanks a lot!

I couldn't agree more! The BOINC application is way too complicated to figure out. Case in point:

I've spent countless of hours trying to figure out why in the hell can't I see my new stats (using BoincStats) by putting my username in the SEARCH bar. No one seems to know why and the SEARCH results come back with "Users Name Found" without any username at the bottom.

Other issues: I've more than 2,138 complete work units from "old" SETI. Don't know when all will transfer to BOINC, nor if everything will transfer (since BOINC reports I've only completed 900+ at end of March).

Very, very frustrating!!!

I see that they have a little information on you at Tobys BOINC stats). I guess it will take a little more time to show up at BOINCstats.

When SETI Classic shuts down the plan is to transfer your remaining credits.

BOINC Stats actually has nothing to do with BOINC, other than keeping stats. Any complications with the stats site have nothing to do with BOINC. Just give it a day. There might have been a problem with the update script or something.

There will be another snapshot when classic is shut down.

Very, very frustrating!!!

Hang in there. It's really not that bad.

To get credit, following must be done:

1) Upload the Result Data File(s), done by Boinc automatically once the WU is crunched. Once this is done the WU get a status of "ready to report" in the tab "Work" of Boinc.

2) Report the Result = claim credit, done by Boinc. Once this is done, the credit is pending.

3) validate the result = comparing your result to at least 2 other results, which means 2 other hosts have also to report their result. Therefore this can take some 10 days. Done by the server in Berkeley.

4) if validated, get credit, which means turning pending credit into granted credit.

See also the excellent explanation of one of ours, Paul, concerning credit.

Other issues: I've more than 2,138 complete work units from "old" SETI. Don't know when all will transfer to BOINC, nor if everything will transfer (since BOINC reports I've only completed 900+ at end of March).

A final snapshot will be done once Classic will shut down. After that your Classic WU's will show up like they are at that moment.
