what is this boinc crap? to much to configure AND it doesn't work.

should i bail out now or spend hours configuring it to work with mac 10.4.1 ?

Funny, BOINC works fine for most folks. However it does work different then the old SETI Classic. I have ran SETI, Einstein, Predictor and Climate Prediction all under BOINC without problem.

Configuration is done through your account page. If you have specific problems, then please try to provide specific questions and maybe someone can help you.

I couldn't be bothered with BOINC and the new web designs. I've been a SETI@home user for 5.5 years, returned 3700 units (top 2%) and now it would seem I'm supposed to be sharing my computer's work load with other johnny-come-lately projects? If I wanted to switch or turn off from SETI@home I would have.

Suffice to say, when classic is no longer supported I guess my house will be a lot quieter when I turn off my computers instead of spending my money on electricity and computer repairs to make SETI@home and this 'Boinc' look good. Thanks for nothing.

PS: After a few minutes browsing the new 'website' all I've seen are reports of problems and outages, etc. Not a good sign, and a good reason not to tinker with something that already worked.

You don't have to share your computer's workload with other projects, you chose the projects to which you want to attach. If SETI@home is the only thing you want your computer to work on, the only attach to that project (that's what I do!).

Up to you, but I think the biggest gripes with the BOINC are that it's more of a pain to set up than SETI Classic and the bugs haven't all been ironed out yet, including a working screensaver 100% of the time. I share that gripe, and I'm sure one day a nice installer package will make BOINC as painless as SETI Classic was to set up.

The old SETI@home site has had its own share of problems, there have been plenty of outages and problems there too in the past (some shared with BOINC I believe, I think some of the servers are the same).

I understand your frustrations, and compared to SETI Classic, BOINC is a bit of an eyesore right now. I think the programmers are concentrating on making the data crunching work best, then they'll get to the user friendly GUI stuff later for the rest of us. Try to hang in there.
