Profile: Deckard

Personal background
I'm a computer consultant currently residing in a small town near Seattle, Washington, U.S. I love to spend my spare time keeping up with the latest in the computer world, usually Macintosh related. I enjoy tweaking and customizing my computer setup, and I hope to get a PC running Windows soon to be truly cross platform - though my first love will always be a Mac.

I'm also a movie buff, I enjoy watching films of all kinds, from the biggest Hollywooed blockbusters to those only a handful of people can claim to have seen. I'm a big fan of the movie Blade Runner, as you may have noticed by the picture I chose. I'm a regular attendee at the Seattle International Film Festival, and I belong to Netflix to feed my habit.

I've also been known to play the occasional computer or Xbox game, though I no longer have the time to be really good at any of them these days. The last game I became pretty good at was the original Quake, so it's been awhile.

Music is a frequent component of my life as well, I have a 20 GB iPod and I'm always listening for the next cool tune. I have a very wide range in taste for music, from classical to hard rock. Favorite artists include The Cure, Scorpions, The Clash and lately, Nelly.

To round things out, I also love to play baseball and softball when I get the chance, and I like to attend games of the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely believe in the existance of extraterrestrial life, there's simply no way that a universe as large as ours would contain only one planet with intelligent life. I've always been interested in the possibility, and the evening sky has always filled me with a sense of awe. I also believe that any life advanced enough to visit our planet would have only friendly intentions, so I'm not worried that the fact we're broadcasting our radio signals into space for others to detect.

I love the idea of using distributed computer for running the project, and the chances of detecting some actual signals have to be substantially higher with the thousands of computers working on it at once. I do my part by running SETI@home in an effort to help in the search itself, of course! I just wish I had more computers to dedicate to the effort. Oh well, one day...
