No new work to process for the past 16 hours or so... Are there noteworthy problems on the server side? Gary |

Thanks, but it took a long time before this hint appears. Best regards Humeyer |

I noticed this as well...hopefully they get the problems resolved soon. The main page mentioned something about a massive failure. |

"Our database server hung and had to be forcibly terminated. It took several hours to check all the tables and indices. Then we ran into problems with our Network Attached Storage device, which we rebooted for the first time in 18 months. Additional outages may occur throughout the night and possibly tomorrow." |

> hey guys! > > there is no work available since 2 or 3 hours... is that just my pc or same > stuff with yours too? hope anyone can help me...! Is it really necessary to keep making posts everytime you run out of work? <a> |

> Is it really necessary to keep making posts everytime you run out of work? Wouldnt it help to have a server status / work unit status page on the site then people would know whats going on and not have to post. I think the problem really is that people dont know if theres no work available or for some reason their system is able to retrieve them Neil |

It certainly would. In the interim, I've added support for Predictor (http://predictor.scripps.edu/) to my BOINC to make up for the shortfall in SETI work units with an 80/20 distribution. I just hate to see those extra CPU cycles go to waste... > Is it really necessary to keep making posts everytime you run out of work? After several years of helping SETI, with very few problems, now lately there have been lots of problems. It would be nice if they could communicate with the people that have been helping them all these years as to what is going on. The "News" section on the BonicSETI site states that they are back to creating new workunits, but everytime I try to get a new one, it tells me that there are none available. I switched to Bonic because of problems with the original client over the weekend. Also, the Server Status on the original SETI site has not been updated in 2 days, not every five minutes like they claim. I know that it is not a perfect world, but it only takes a minute to make a posting on a website as to what is going on, especially with over 5 million users trying to help. John |

I agree, if they know there is a problem, post it, how hard could it be to say, No work available at this time, it is not your computer, it is not the new boinc program it is on our side. Then give us a time frame... 24 hour/36 hours.... something. lee > > I know that it is not a perfect world, but it only takes a minute to make a > posting on a website as to what is going on, especially with over 5 million > users trying to help. > > John > |

I have been number crunching SETI units day in and day out since 1999. Doing something with my computer I thought worthwhile. Now since switching to BOINC my machine sits idle. No work. The news bullitin said the splitters stopped sometime between 5pm and 12am PDT. PDT ? whats that. A huge proportion of SETI crunchers live out in the big wide world and have no idea what PDT EST MST or DDT means but they all understand UTC so please lets use that on the News Bullitin. My computer has been telling me since 0716 UTC today that there is no work to be had from BOINC. It is now 2130 UTC and still no work and still no update on the news page. When running large computer systems such as I myself work on short staff is not an excuse. Rule number one is when the system goes wrong the first thing you do is inform the users. Then and only then do you start trouble shooting. Then when you find the problem you update your users again and keep them updated until the system is back. So come on please a little more effort for the users or run the risk of losing them to other number crunching causes. |

Message from the main page: "July 19, 2004 Sometime between 5pm and 12am PDT, the splitters seem to have stopped producing new workunits. We have restarted the splitters and they are back to creating new workunits." Guess we just wait and see what happens! |

I managed to grab 3 new ones about an hour ago. Got 1 and then the 'no work' message. A short while later it grabbed the other 2. Maybe they are slowly filtering through? And probably every Bonker is waiting to grab them too! [url=http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/thefinalfrontear/index.html] |

We deserve the basic right of being informed of what's going on. "see the front page" just isn't good enough. I've written to Berkley and I will encourage everyone else who has a gripe about the 'no work' fiasco to do the same. Let the bosses of the project know how we really feel. Forums (or is it forae??) like this one are nice - but do the UC Berkley head honchos really read all of the posts?? I upgraded my PC and went from a modem to ADSL primarily because of the SETI project - now I can't get enough work units to keep my machine busy. I've preocessed one unit in the past 24 hours - recently I've been completeing 10-15 a day. I am seriously thinking of turning my PC off when I'm not using it because Berkley can't provide me with enough work for the SETI project. Be patient seems to be the call - - are the people who say this associated with Berkley in any way?? No work means no patience from me. Write to Berkley and choose a department to have a whinge to....their home page is http://www.berkeley.edu/ ciao tony the man from the land down under |

So bare with me here, I'm new to BOINC. What do we need to do to get a new work unit? Or is there simply nothing we can do until the issue is resolved? Thanks, Dave |

obviously the people at Seti@Home are not concerned at all about the free CPU times donated by the little guy. Imagine what would happen if Linux/Windows OS companies turned out a BOINC program like the guys at Berkeley have done. No support, no answers, compile your own program. Like others, I have donated my computers for the last 4 years only to be ignored by the staff. I for one am going to disconnect from SETI until they can treat the public with a little more respect....... |
