With 4.19, you could set a switch: -return_results_immediately and it would do a project update immediately after each upload. This removed the necessity of either manually updating the project, or waiting until it requested more work to get the results posted. Is there any way to tell 4.25 to do this? Or is this ANOTHER of the nice things that were dropped in the new release? |

I have been rethinking my stance ... I think it *IS* a positive step forward, even though I don't like the visuals at all. The best news is that there is now an abstracted layer and the code base is to be common across all platforms. So, we start out butt ugly, but working across all platforms. So, everyone is now on a level playing field. Yes the 4.19 GUI is better for the windows users. But 4.19 has nothing for the Macintosh and Linux users. Now, for them we have (or will have soon), a common client. Now those who have only a linux or Macintosh computer are not left out in the cold from the "official" version. Those of us that have "farms" can use BOINC View to manage the systems, and to be honest with you, though I installed the BOINC GUI and not the service, I don't use the BIONC GUI for much of anything at all. For the Macintosh there is now BOINC Menubar that seems to work pretty darn well ... And soon as I can walk and talk and think again I am going to change my install for them to reflect this ... |

The new BOINC 4.25 seems to grant less credit along with the new benchmark numbers being lower. My faster machine was claiming about 25 credits each time. Now it is claiming about 18. My slower machine was claiming about 35. Now it is claiming about 29. I suppose I can't complain as I am quite often granted credit higher than I claim. I can't help thinking that we should be credited for the work we do. Not how or at what speed we do it. I've got to find something to replace that cat. |

BUCK...so if we are all in the same boat...like i think we are...it will make little or no difference where you stand compared to other crunchers as for as credit totals go...i'm going to check back here later to see what PAUL has to say about this. ![]() PROUD TO BE TFFE! |

Not how > or at what speed we do it. The old benchmarks were actually inflated under Windows -- so yeah, claimed credit is lower. The idea is to grant credit for the work you do -- in processor operations (floating point and integer ops). So, if your machine takes an hour to crunch a work unit, and my machine takes four hours on the same WU, we claim about the same credit, and the averaging built-in to the credit system makes sure we're granted the same number for the same work. |

I feel better now for the moment anyways. |

The aim of the boinc dev team was to run boinc as a service with the least permissions to allow the application to run without giving the applications full access to the pc system. 73 de Peter VK3AVE ![]() ![]() |

Or is this ANOTHER of the nice > things that were dropped in the new release? > Yes you can use: -return_results_immediately If you start Boinc CLI yourself instead of using Boincmgr. Use this in a shortcut: "C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\boinc.exe" -redirectio -return_results_immediately Change the path if your Boinc directory is different. Boincmgr adds the -redirectio when it starts the CLI so I kept it when I tested this earlier in the week. I only used it on 1 predictor wu and it worked fine. I also used Boincview and it recorded the wu in the Completed tab. In the past with previous versions of Boinc it would sometimes miss a wu if I used -return_results_immediately. However Boincview still might miss a wu if you use this switch with 4.25, I do not know with this limited test. You can still start Boincmgr but exiting it will not stop the Boinc CLI. Logging off will stop it safely. The blank DOS window that is brought up when using the shortcut can be closed by clicking the x. Tested on Win XP Pro SP2 - Your results may differ |

Hello. I noticed something rather unpleasant in this version. I have swap beetwen applications interval set to 150 minutes. But when I do a manual update on any project, CC switches to another app. For example: 11.3.2005 12:40:53|Einstein@Home|Resuming result H1_1452.9__1453.0_0.1_T16_Test02_2 using einstein version 4.79 11.3.2005 12:40:53|SETI@home|Pausing result 03ja05aa.1508.28785.629848.236_3 (left in memory) 11.3.2005 12:40:53|ProteinPredictorAtHome|Sending request to scheduler: http://predictor1.scripps.edu/predictor_cgi/cgi 11.3.2005 12:40:55|ProteinPredictorAtHome|Scheduler RPC to http://predictor1.scripps.edu/predictor_cgi/cgi succeeded 11.3.2005 12:41:28|ProteinPredictorAtHome|Sending request to scheduler: http://predictor1.scripps.edu/predictor_cgi/cgi 11.3.2005 12:41:29|ProteinPredictorAtHome|Scheduler RPC to http://predictor1.scripps.edu/predictor_cgi/cgi succeeded 11.3.2005 13:22:09|Einstein@Home|Pausing result H1_1452.9__1453.0_0.1_T16_Test02_2 (left in memory) 11.3.2005 13:22:09|SETI@home|Resuming result 03ja05aa.1508.28785.629848.236_3 using setiathome version 4.09 11.3.2005 13:22:10|climateprediction.net|Sending request to scheduler: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi 11.3.2005 13:22:11|climateprediction.net|Scheduler RPC to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi succeeded In the above example it did that twice. First time when I updated p@h and second time when CPDN was updated. Also, notice that it switches apps. just before actual updating takes place. ![]() |

OK, I'll give it a try tonight. I currently have 3 systems BOINCing and use Boincview from my master PC. I may need keep BOINC manager running on the master PC. I'll need to check out a few things though: 1. Can I suspend/abort WUs on the PCs running the CLI only? Can Boincview do this instead? 2. Will I still get all the msg log/task/WU info? 3. Other...? ![]() Final Classic total: 11446 WU Classic CPU hours: 72,366 |

Yes, BoincView can do that, as well as instruct CLI not to download new WUs (depliting mode), which the manager cannot do. > 2. Will I still get all the msg log/task/WU info? Yep. BoincView is waaaay better than the manager. > 3. Other...? Yes, much more, like comprehensively managing several CLIs on different hosts; giving additional statistics (I, for one now know that I produce an average of 10.82 credits per hour) :) --- Everything is just A Question of Physics |

Yes you can use Boincview or start Boincmgr separately to control the CLI. 2. Yes 3. If you start the CLI directly and then start Boincmgr and then exit Boincmgr it no longer halts the CLI Edit; I'll try the -return_results_immediately this weekend for a longer time and see if Boincview records all the wu's in the Complete tab /edit |

@Boinc User/Stanislav, Thanks for both your help. I've got the CLI running on two systems so far (my daughter is playing a game on the other) with no problems (we'll see how long THAT lasts!). I closed the DOS box after the CLI started up...I was afraid I'd have to keep it minimized to the task bar, but the CLI kept running after I closed the box. Boincview is running fine...can see the WUs, messages, etc. [EDIT] This is great! I've even got an icon slot in the systray released. Is there anyway to shutdown the CLI if I need to other than logging off or killing it with task manager? [/EDIT] ![]() Final Classic total: 11446 WU Classic CPU hours: 72,366 |

If you've installed as a service, either go into the service-control-panel and stop BOINC, or open up a cmd and type net stop boinc |

Created a shortcut to boinc.exe and ran it to start the CLI. I don't need to stop it presently, but if I DID need to, I'd like to know how to stop the CLI without logging off or killing it with task manager. |

I just installed 4.26 (on Windows XP SP2), and am getting used to the changes in the manager screens. One that I haven't seen mentioned, and is on my "not a good change, lost feature" list, is the use of the manager to go to the project's website. It no longer uses my preferred, default browser, but starts up Internet Exploder. Not good, not good! BOINCView sounds more interesting now, it seens a good time to play with that. ![]() |

4.25 is buggy. Can't sort rows by clicking the tabs. Also, disk usage are without graphics. ;) |
