I now have a nickname of "Thread Priate", cool. I think you misunderstand the nature of things though, mix in a little more common sense, and I think you'll come up with a better understanding of how things work. As far as the FAQ and the like go, it has been put on hold for awhile. I was on the march to get 4.19 out the door, and now have to startup the march to get 4.6x out the door. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

As far as the FAQ and the like go, it has been put on hold for awhile. I was on the march to get 4.19 out the door, and now have to startup the march to get 4.6x out the door. How you guys find time to moderate and develop is beyond me... ☠ Avarst, ye matey! Go on and be making the SETI 4.6 booty, or I'll have you a-walk the plank, arr! |

Pirate Rom, Pirate. Sheesh! > I think you misunderstand the nature of things though, mix in a little more > common sense, and I think you'll come up with a better understanding of how > things work. I'm assuming you don't have the sense to understand how condescending the above statement sounds. Am I correct? > As far as the FAQ and the like go, it has been put on hold for awhile. I was > on the march to get 4.19 out the door, and now have to startup the march to > get 4.6x out the door. Great non-answer. This should work indefinitely. Are you afraid that if there's a faq or board guidelines that it might cramp your style Mr. Thread Pirate? Oh, and if you have time, how about another non-answer to the question about posting personal information on these boards? |

> > Oh, and if you have time, how about another non-answer to the question > > This has been covered, Try reading Rom's post again.... That would be fine except Thread Pirate gave several different responses to this question. The one he repeated several times, even after the one you just quoted, was that he needed to research the subject. So far he hasn't let anyone know if he ever did that or what his opinion is now. Do you have an opinion about this? |

Do you have an > opinion about this? > Ok You asked, I don't believe that as a general rule Personal Information should be posted in this forum, unless faced with what we experienced last month and before. I believe it was a tool that was used to retaliate; besides the information was already published. It was a very upsetting time and this forum will never be the same because of it. I feel that we do not need FAQ for the forum; the better name should be Forum Rules, 1. Treat everyone as if they are standing in front of you. 2. Use common sense and don't stir the pot. 3. If you need to be plonked through self policing then so be it. 4. If you do not crunch for SETI and or Bionic projects and have questions post to the appropriate forum. Number Crunching or Q&P… 5. If things get totally out of hand then the moderators can step in, they don't need any reasons to justify deleting post or people. This forum is for us all but if one or two are insighting a riot then get rid of them, Black ball them for a certain period of time. It would be up to the moderators to decided what to do etc... These are my personal feelings and thoughts. I do not speak for anyone or group. Including the SETI gang…. BTW: If one of my friends are attacked I will help defend them…. Tim ![]() |

Have I done any additional research on the area of personal information disclosure? Nope, I've been working on additional BOINC releases. I did read an article on ZDNet that describes a similar situation though: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9588_22-5559474.html [blockquote] In a ruling that strengthens Internet free-speech protections, a New Jersey court has said that an owner of an online discussion board is not responsible for derogatory, malicious and even potentially defamatory comments posted to it. [/blockquote] [blockquote] A part of the Communications Decency Act that remains intact today--its "indecency" and "patently offensive" restrictions were struck down by the Supreme Court--says that "no provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider." A number of other courts have reached similar conclusions about the law's breadth. [/blockquote] To that end, I still believe that if the information has been posted by the user to another publicly searchable information source ( google, phone book, membership directories, etc. ) on the Internet, it is not against the law to use it in posts. Now I do not believe it is ethical for personal information to be disclosed on a forum without the users consent, either through a post that they have made, or in email. I'm not here to change anybodies beliefs on ethics or morality. I expect people to behave in a way that is kid friendly. At some point in time we'll have to address forum rules and conduct, eventually the goal is for the forums to be able to be used via kids in school to discuss the science involved in this project. We have to change a few features before that can happen though, like removing the ability to inline images to un-trusted websites. Given David's response to some pictures that were found in the profile area by Misfit and crew, I suspect we are further away from that, than I thought. If there is a problem on the board, a moderator should be contacted. There shouldn't be a need to disclose personal information to make somebody go away. Just keep in mind, as a general rule people can express themselves, it doesn't mean that they are right or wrong, if you don't like it, ignore them. If somebody doesn't like a decision of mine, they can take it up with David. I'm not here to favor one group of people over another, my goals are to keep the community moving forward. It has been my experience that people tend to behave better then there is somebody whom they can appeal their case too, which is now my job. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

> And, I cannot believe the gall of a certain Ignore[ant] person here > talking like that to Rom. Black ball comes to mind.... As much as you would like to, Rom really doesn't need or want y'all to fight over licking his black balls. It would help more if you'd quit the obscene groveling and just act normal. Do you have an opinion on if we need board rules, guidelines, a faq, etc.? |
