Anyone else think that the new look of the website front page is hideous? And where have they put the BBCode?

:(

I disagree. I think the new website looks great.

I disagree!
It's clearly laid out.
It's (afaik) without so many useless gimmicks.
Only the sponsors might be not that lucky to be thrown from the front page, but I can live with that.

No offense intended but, You have to be kidding right?

I think since this board has calmed down and there is no major issue
at the moment, People are grasping at straws to find someone
or something to Bitch about. Our new look is Wonderful, Professional, Easy to read and understand.

Keep in mind we will have a half million classic users moving in soon
and This format is just right all laid out for them. I hope the other
projects do the same....

Is is clearly laid out, I'll give you that. I _do_ think that the old front page was laid out as well, if not better and also a _lot_ easier on the eye.

I didn't notice any gimmicks on the old setiboinc website.

I also never really noticed the sponsors, though it is a pity they have been pushed off the front page.

The whole combination of colours, images and layout makes it look like the mutant offspring of the old setiboinc front page and the seti classic one :(

It's not as if setiboinc is some commercial website that has to change its look every 5 minutes to keep the punters rolling in.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

PS: At least it's only the front page that has been mutilated so badly :)

PPS: Anyway why redesign for the seti classic users, just put up a message saying 'What took you so long' :)

Some people just can't stand changes in their life. They want everything to remain static.

I suspect it is work still in progress?

I like the fact that SET@home should get an upgraded front end. If nothing else it says that the SETI & Berkeley crew are participating in the life of the forum as well as wanting to try ways of welcoming people to the project and site..

I must agree with you though that it is not exactly 'balanced' to the eye.

Still its only just been changed so who know what wonders are in store for us later.

If I offended anyones' feelings by criticising the redesign I apologise.
I also should have stated why I did'nt like it clearly in the first post, so it didn't look like trolling.

And yes, I do object to needless change.

But who says they were needless? The whole website and forums here have undergone a redesign, with more options, better security (we hope). It now looks like something of the 21st Century. Even though it's all still ASCII characters on a bulletin board service.

Improving security is _obviously_ not a needless change. I was referring to the cosmetic surgery.

The color-scheme is terrible. Orange on bark blue? The HTMLers must be smoking some low-grade stuff to have come up with that...

Looks better in greyscale, though.

And where have they put the BBCode?
We don't need no stinkin' BBCode!

In Number Crunching is a thread, that has at least one other argument (besides 'never change a running thingy', it's here.
I tried myself, and it's really not fine.
I usually do it that way myself (highest resolution and adjusted fonts) but here at home I have a new 19" TFT, and that is 1280x1024 and good readable at 100% size on Netscape, and at work I have a 21" with 1600x1200, which is also OK with 100% (or whatever it's called on IE) and my eyes;-)
But I just tried the resolution most of my colleagues prefer (120 - 150%), and the whole page lost it's neatness.
Not that fine.

I like the new look. Restful on the eyes. Don't see the hideous part unless I superimpose on the screen a transparency of my old DI.

Nice to know some people agree with me about the unsettling colours :)

But it seems the concencus is in favour of the new look.

I withdraw from the field bloodied, but unbowed.

PS NeoAmsterdam - With consideration I agree BBCode is bloat.

Not that it's bloat, but rather unnecessary.

Life would be much easier if I could use <code>s, <var>s, and/or <tt>s. Even <table>s would be appreciated (Instead of having to do ASCII-based <pre>s).

What the users are asking for isn't BBCode, because that's HTML. No, what they're asking for are "emoticons" - And that is bloat.

Emoticons have their place, especially for "new" members. I'm pretty sarcastic ;) , and sometimes that sort of thing gets lost in this medium. If 1% of the 50K users likely to switch, that would be 500 new folks that don't know us, and we don't know. Smilies (emoticons), can help smooth things over.

Still looking for something profound or inspirational to place here.

There are lots (maybe 50%) of people using images and emoticons already but linking from outside.

Some of those are broken and definatly get broken by the time they are quoted several times (A nice upgrade would be better quoting of links...)

All of this external linking and broken links have an effect. Sometimes my browser won't even finish a page as images hang.

In that sense having a few fun graphics on the server (I have a whole set of emoticons that take up less than 50kb) would stop this overload.

In this senario emoticons actually reduces bloat overall

Must remember it's img src not img scr ... :)

One thing of annoyance I noticed of late, is that when I go answer in a long thread, I get to this answer window, then all of a sudden I jump back to the middle of the thread, just as I start typing (yes, I do see the cursor at that time in the answer window). Anyway, maybe a bug here or a bug in my Moz 1.8b.
