The original post brought back vivid memories for me. I was born in England in 1951. One of my earliest memories is of sitting on the kitchen floor and playing ripping up the stamps I had found in the cupboard - me mam came and and gave me a slap for ripping up the sugar ration book! Nowadays she would be locked up since the government seems to think it can tell parents how to bring up the kids - if they were that wise, we wouldn't have Phony Tony and Howard the Coward hanging about at the moment.

I lived in Salford, near the docks. It was supposed to be a rough area - we had the only car in the street, the only telly, the only phone and the only fridge - we were better off than most people in the street cos my dad and my mum both worked - lots didn't have a job and used to queue in the mornings at the docks for work. Having said all that, no-one locked their doors until they went to bed. We lived in a little 2 up, 2 down and moved away when I was 11.

All that said it feels like a dream now, a good dream and one I wish some of the kids today could experience.

At the moment, I have a headset on listening to ABBA Gold and wondering where it all went - God sounding maudlin now! My kids haven't given me grankids yet - bring it on, I can't wait :) :)

I often leave my door or windows open and get told off by my 60+ year old neighbours.

Often its a matter of where I live but at the moment I am on the intersection of suburbia and an estate.

Mind I do not leave them as open as I did when I lived in the inner city as in the inner city there are always a greater number os respectable people on the streets and it felt safer.

I wonder if its the number of people using the streets these days that affects our peceptions (along with the number of goodies we now want to protect in our homes)?

I asked my wife one day why she bothered locking the back door when the key is right there.. She looked at me and said "I don't know", locked the door and walked down the steps.. I laughed all the way down the steps...

We have a DEW line here on the farm.. Dog Early Warning system..

Followed by the Redneck Security System.. That would be my father-in-law who beleives that the 2nd Amendment actually said All Americans are required to be armed..

Last but not least we have the Internal Security System... There is a reason I knew that dog in the picture Dogbytes posted was about to attack :)

You'd be better off trying to break into my father-n-laws house next door.. Your death would be swifter then if you broke into mine.

Please Note I do live in "The South"...

I hear some more country songs....

We city boys still do some things the country way.

I have a loaded 12 guage pump action shotgun (00 3" magnum) handy in my bedroom,
And a Glock 40cal SW in my desk right here.

Who needs to lock the doors when you want to do some target practice in this neighborhood.

She's doing very well, thank you for asking! And she's still giving me the "Oh, when are you going to have children..." schpiel. [swigs the vodka] She's already got two great-grandchildren... [swigs the vodka] ...she doesn't even bother to ask who I'm dating - which, for the record, is no one... [swigs the vodka]...

I'm an old timer. I like the sound of a nice "White Ash" Louisville
Slugger when it violently contacts the kneecaps.

I got one of them, too, but (1) aluminum doesn't leave any splinters, (2) it's easier to clean, and (3) makes a really funny sound.

It depends on what you are trying to stop.
I have a Dan Wesson Model 19, 357, with 4 interchangeable barrels ranging from 2 inches to 10 inches. The 10 inch barrel is like shooting a rifle, but the 2 inch will knock you backwards with the right ammo. The nice thing about it, with hallow points, it makes a nice little whole at entry, and a bowling ball whole on exit.
It gets the point across fast.

Pete, What part of the South?

Rocky

NA,
That's one of the funniest things I have heard today, 'It makes a real funny sound"

Keep it up, I need more laughs!
