Sorry. The damaged disk is on my desktop PC not the Vaio.

The Vaio is now up and running win2k. The Vaio was a link in the story and explained how I got to where I now am.

The damaged XP disk is now sitting near my desktop PC waiting for me to find software that can locate the NTFS backup file directory and extract the files.

As to 'too many cooks'... It's actually useful at this moment to hear what people think (except the doom ones :) )..

Guess I'll go have breakfast and try later...

Cheers

Check out Sysinternals at http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/ntfswin98.shtml

Their software allowed me to retrieve imformation from a damaged NTFS disk.

Else try Directory Snoop from http://www.briggsoft.com/dsnoop.htm

It reads FAT32 and NTFS drives, allows you to get data back even after a full format. It also allows for complete deletion of files. The software allows for 25 full trials before you have to buy it. It does need a working version of Windows to run on though.
