Actually I don't think it's fair to say the US going ballistic. Most countries have gone ballistic. No countries have the preparedness to deal with a pandemic like this. Instead of looking of confirmed cases in a country look at how many die from Covid-19.
In the US it's now 31/1M pop and in Australia it's only 2. In Italy it's 273, UK 79 and in Sweden it's 47.
Now what did Australia do to get so low mortality rates then so many other countries?

US Trend is now down https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections significantly from a week ago.

California, that horrible blue place no red dares live, has now gotten so far ahead it is shipping 500 ventilators to NY. Early effective social distancing seems to have worked.

Why is this so hard for a red to understand and practice?

Too bad 8 red state governors can't seem to understand logic, math or science.

Probably being a very big island and using border restrictions when we did helped a lot, but acting when we did (even though that action was considered slow by some) and the amount of testing and tracking along with having a very good public healthcare system (that anyone can access without it costing them a small fortune) after that would be my best guess along with implementing social distancing standards and an effective communication system on health and social requirement alerts over all media formats has also kept most of the public well informed (some find it more than annoying as we're constantly being bombarded with it).

I just miss being able to go to the pub for a beer (or 3) and having a yack with the other locals there.

There are no raccons in Sweden but still:)
In the WWII we used a tiger as a symbol (keep quit) but now it's a racoon (wash your hands).
"A Swedish raccoon" was launched as a campaign by Region Skåne last week to remind you to wash your hands. But after hearing the emergency preparedness museum, it was quickly withdrawn. This made many readers upset and now the raccoon is emerging in new form.

We can actually still go for a beer here at pubs. Almost. But just as long you keep a distance to other people.

Then it's not really a problem. Many countries think that Sweden have a "laissez faire" attitude to the pandemic. That's nonsense since in Sweden we are used to keep a distance to people. Actually we in the Nordic countries have done it for ages.

Shortage of ventilators - yep.
Shortage of PPE - yep.
Shortage of oxygen - now that's a new one, also, all depends on the size of the pipes. :-(

Coronavirus in Formula 1: Mercedes make breathing aid freely available
Mercedes has made the design of a new breathing-aid device it helped develop freely available to help fight the coronavirus crisis.

The device helps patients with lung infections breathe more easily when an oxygen mask alone is insufficient.

The device was designed in conjunction with University College London.

UCL Hospital consultant Professor Mervyn Singer said: "These devices help save lives by ensuring ventilators are used only for the most severely ill."

The new 'continuous positive airway pressure' device was reverse-engineered from a previous model in less than 100 hours and received regulatory approval last week.

The revised design consumes 70% less oxygen than the earlier model.

The designs released by Mercedes for public use include specifications of materials, tools and kit used in the rapid-prototyping process.

It is a phenomenal achievement that they are arriving at hospitals only two weeks after the first prototype was built. It shows what can be done when universities, hospitals and industry work together for the national good.
It's amazing what can be achieved without the aid of quangos.

https://www.foxnews.com/media/karen-whitsett-trump-hydroxychloroquine-saved-my-life

Why stop using this drug that MAY save a person's life?

No one have stopped testing that drug. But FDA haven't yet approved it for public use for very good reasons.
It's a big problem when a state leader says what and how a health authority should do.
In Sweden (it's called ministerial government here) and most other countries it's unconstitutional. Also in the US.
Trump thinks hydroxychloroquine is a game changer and thinks it is possible to cut corners.
Why doesn't Trump talk about the other drugs that are also being tested if they can cure CV?
In this case, the treatment was successful.
How many other cases were fatal?
Why have an authority like the FDA when a president can change the rules at his own discretion?

Why stop using this drug that MAY save a person's life?

Because that wild voodoo PR-stunt 'guess' (to be very charitable in using the description 'guess') WILL KILL PEOPLE if that voodoo stunt turns out to do nothing useful or even turns out to be harmful.

Just as there are already news reports of people blindly following 'health conspiracy theories' posted on the internet by big ego jokers and pranksters, for those people (victims) to then unfortunately die from following the false advice...

There is also the very bad result that the presidential focus and hype will distract from efforts towards actually effective treatments.

Note also that the presidential source for his 'very silly PR claims' has been completely discredited (read effectively as "lies") as a stunt (for whatever reasons) for that source journal.

Coronavirus wreaks havoc in African American neighbourhoods

... What's behind the disparity in Chicago?

Mayor Lightfoot said diabetes, heart disease and respiratory illness were "really prevalent" in black communities.

Dr Arwady told reporters that even if everyone in the city did have access to a doctor, "we would still see significant health disparities because of food deserts and lack of walkable streets".

Dr Cameron Webb, an African-American physician who is running for Congress in the US state of Virginia, told BBC News that US racial and economic disparities were being amplified by the pandemic.

"It really exposes our society's fault lines," he said...

Please post a link to where and what source was discredited.....
Black Chicagoans account for half of all coronavirus cases in the city and more than 70% of deaths, despite making up 30% of the population...
and how many of that 30% are morbidly obese? That is the underlying condition MOST prevalent and causing most of the other conditions (diabetes, heart disease, etc.) linked to WuHu Flu fatalities. Obesity is a major health concern in the US for all races but seems to be very common in certain ones.

I'm not being racist just stating know facts...

Obesity and African Americans

African American women have the highest rates of obesity or being overweight compared to other groups in the United States. About 4 out of 5 African American women are overweight or obese.
In 2018, non-Hispanic blacks were 1.3 times more likely to be obese as compared to non-Hispanic whites.
In 2018, African American women were 50 percent more likely to be obese than non-Hispanic white women.
From 2013-2016, non-Hispanic black females were 2.3 times more likely to be overweight as compared to non-Hispanic white females.
People who are overweight are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, high levels of blood fats, diabetes and LDL cholesterol – all risk factors for heart disease and stroke.1
In 2018, African Americans were 20 percent less likely to engage in active physical activity as compared to non-Hispanic whites.

I'm not a racist but...

Oh dear. The US is still doing statistics comparing people of different skin color...
Do you also compare those who have blond hair and black hair? Blue and brown eyes?
Obesity has nothing to do with pigmentation.
It's about people with different means also known as people living in poverty.
In the US black people have a lower income than white people using American terminology.
It's a fact that people with a low income are more obese than people with a higher income.
And low income people in the US don't have access to health care. Black or white.

In Wuhan, the city where the corona virus first got spread, the quarantine that residents have been in since January 23 can be canceled tomorrow. Johan Björnfot, who lives in Wuhan, is probably one of the Swedes who quarantined for the longest during the corona epidemic. Soon he will have to walk freely in the streets again.
"The uncertainty that one does not really know when the danger is over has been worst," says Johan Björnfot about his 75 days in quarantine.

Acting Navy secretary Thomas Modly has since walked back the claim that Captain Crozier "leaked" the letter to the San Francisco Chronicle, How it got there no one is saying at the moment.
Probably found out it came from his area.
And apparently the navy is now scrambling to remove 2,700 personnel from the ship, an act that should have started over a week ago.
Hope the replacement crew speak up & ask for confirmation the ship has been disinfected.

Seems he had to walk back all the way to his own job. https://apnews.com/806e7feb6749380553a3ae613871dbb4
