That fan also has the Omnijoin Adapter set which is just some Scotchlocks so you could adapt the existing fan headers that are attached to the GPIO pins to the new Noctua fan and avoid using the USB adapter.

If you are using the Noctua fans they usually have a 3 to 2 pin adapter cable. You can plug the 2 pin directly into the GPIO 5 volt pins on the Pi. See Mod my Pi Case

Hi Mark,

My current cases need no modding, they were made for fan usage. :) The thing I like is they are open on 4 sides to allow airflow like the non-blower type graphics cards.

Looks like Newegg doesn't have the very Noctua fan kit you show on your blog. I did find it on Amazon though. I'm trying to stay away from buying from Amazon but they won't allow me too. ;) Oh well. In 2 weeks I'll order me 3 of those fan kits. And replace the current fans. Since I have my Pis in a stack build, I need to tear the stack down to get to Pi #1 so I may as well replace all fans while I'm at it. :) Thanks for the info Mark! :)

In a stack arrangement the guys usually put larger (like 80mm) fans on the GPIO side of the stack and blow across. Sometimes they have one fan on top of the other which typically will be good for a stack of 5 Pis. The fans are still 5 volts though.

I don’t know if you’ve seen this video from our team founder on Einstein where he builds a PI cluster using a stack arrangement:

I'll look at those videos later this morning, got other stuff to do first.

I don't buy from eBay. I have seen way too many horror stories of people getting screwed one way or another: Product wasn't what was stated it was, never got the item, etc. I won't buy there. I'll stick with Newegg and if I have to, Amazon, as in this case.

Here's a photo of my Pi stack:

I have since reconfigured to have them on the lower shelf of the table and they are now connected to an 8 port switch. It doesn't appear that I can put an external fan on mine, the switch would interfere, it's really close and overlaps the Pis. Because of the lack of space in my room, I only have 1 foot Ethernet cables connecting them to the switch.

I'll look at the videos in a little while.

I just discovered something for the Pi that is very interesting. I'm sure that the Linux gurus here may already know about this. If you open a terminal window and type this:

watch -n 2 "vcgencmd measure_temp"

It will display the Pi's temperature every 2 seconds (or another number of seconds by changing the 2). It's displayed in the same location and not scrolling down the screen like a python script I found. Or was it a bash script? I don't remember. All I remember was that it was a script.

I would like to find something that would display the temps on the taskbar like Real Temp does for Winders. Now THAT would be cool! :) I'm no programmer so I cannot come up with such a utility. :(

Look in the repository for a desktop extension. On Ubuntu, the GNOME desktop has many extensions so you can put just about anything you want into the Top bar. There might be the same for the RPI3 desktop.

Over in the land of Raspberry Pi, we have a new release:


Raspberry Pi OS Update Improves Chrome, VLC, SD Card Support

... It's the delicious scent of a new version of Raspbian, the operating system used by Raspberry Pi devices, making its debut. ... The update brings with it the Chromium 72 web browser, version 3.0.6 of the VLC media player and a grab bag of other package updates and quality of life improvements for the platform.

Phoronix said the Raspbian 2019-04-08 update also includes "SD Card Copier tweaks to reduce copy failures, various bug fixes" and the introduction of Ethtool and RNG-tools...


That article also gives a good summary of the latest events and milestones for the Raspberry Pi.

According to Martin's post, there is an update to Raspbian for our Pis. Following the instructions on the page linked on the download page Martin linked to sounds to me like it's an install. I Googled "how to update Linux on a Raspberry Pi" and found this page on the official Raspberry Pi website. Do these commands update the Linux OS or just software installed?:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I have not used the second command with the "dist-" before the "upgrade", only "upgrade". The reason I ask is if there is an update to the kernel, does this update the kernel too?

Just showing my noobieness for Linux, again. ;)

I got my Jetson Nano yesterday. You need a 5v 4a barrel Jack, and I went with the 40x40x10 5 volt noctau fan. Plugs in the fan pins on the board with no modifications needed.

You're supposed to be able to power it up also via the micro-USB connector if you move the power header selector jumper. I have a coaxial power supply ready for mine. Still haven't seen mine yet. Last word is it won't be delivered till the 24th. Forgot about ordering the Noctua 5V 40X40mm fan for mine. Thanks for reminding me.

I watch this Jetson channel on YouTube. He says, yes it works with the usb, but it is throttled. I ordered my power and fan from amazon, they ship quickly. Default is powered by usb straight from the box. To use the barrel Jack you need a jumper.
