Deaths in war are always horrible, civilian casualties especially so. We should remember our own sins whenever we express outrage at terrorists who take civilian lives. I am not saying that terrorists are justified in their actions. Of course their crimes are brutal and should be condemned. I am only saying that terrorists would have a hard time matching the number of civilian lives our country took when atomic bombs were dropped on Japan.

Agreed Angela, of the material that the Manhattan Project made into bombs, there was only enough material for 4 A Bombs I read, 1 went off as a test @ White Sands NM, 2 in Japan and the last never left the US, though it was about to when the war ended, sparing many lives.

It was a World War, and Japan had to be stopped But I wish there had been another way. There are those today that wish it had been dropped on another country ......

Agreed Chris S, there was talk of orders being cut for all available US Troops in Europe to be sent to the Pacific, this is based on the casualty rates at Okinawa. Japan had hoarded a lot of troops for defense of the home islands after the Doolittle Raid.

We must also remember the 100s of Thousands of lives, both civilian and military, that would have been lost had the Allies had to invade the Japanese Home Islands to end the war. I have seen what remain of the Japanese tunnels on Saipan, and around Yokosuka Naval Base on Honshu.

A surviving member of the 509th, Norris Jernigan, lives in Visalia, and will be honored, alongside 45 other local WWII Veterans, at a dinner on Saturday 15 August, the 70th Anniversary of the war's end. I am an officer of the sponsoring organization.

Gerry did sentence Packer to be hanged on May 19, 1883, "until you are dead, dead, dead, and may God have mercy upon your soul."

I just put in the last of the screws that I took out of My tv, I've got the proper top piece and hopefully screws for the stand on the way, the seller wants the top piece He sent to Me by mistake back and I ordered the screws to attach the stand to the tv, since the seller didn't include those, turns out they are machine screws, I had to order the screws labeled UN55D6000SF as they use the same stand as the UN55D6050TF, so they should be the same and there are two lengths, 4 of each, one set or the other ought to be ok, plus they were $6.90 total. And the led lamp strips are still out of stock($54.95 for a pair, 1-L and 1-R), pretty much everywhere, I've got about half a dozen active searches on ebay on the look out for these led strips, I wish I could take one from a different Samsung 55" tv, but I think that isn't possible.

There are those who claim Japan would have surrendered without such measures being necessary. I think not. Perhaps they would have accepted a cease fire, but not a surrender. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABj%C5%8D_incident While the coup failed, perhaps it did so only because the reality of the futility of continuing was demonstrated by the atomic weapons, hence the plotters were unable to recruit enough supporters to carry it out, and the necessarily hasty nature of the attempt.

Also after Germany came back from WWI to fight WWII, I don't believe any of the allies would have accepted any form of armistice, cease fire or peace agreement. They would have all demanded total surrender, and announced such at Potsdam. People today can not accept how totally focused and committed the people of then were, there was zero room for compromise solutions. Similar to the commitment of a suicide bomber.

So many posts since my last...

Hunting: One part of me can understand the sense of satisfaction, accomplishment, and other similar emotions that must come with successfully hitting a target that can, at any moment and for any reason, suddenly move, whether that reason be the target's instinct telling it it's in danger or just a passing whim. Another part of me realizes that it's still a living creature and the above is not a good enough reason to kill it. I certainly hope and believe that all of us would have long since given up crunching and even ownership of a computer before we got to the point of eating a pet or another human (unless an outright disaster was involved).

I am still grossed out by the scene in Capricorn 1 where the black guy (was it OJ Simpson?) caught a rattlesnake and ate it raw, and I saw that when I was a kid.

Nukes: I neither discount entirely nor lean heavily on the argument that we didn't know how horrible the lasting effects would be. I give more, but not total, weight to the argument about how bloody the war would have been without the nukes. I sincerely like to believe that (most of) humanity learned the lesson, as evidenced by the fact that no one in the world has ever done it again.

I sincerely like to believe that (most of) humanity learned the lesson, as evidenced by the fact that no one in the world has ever done it again.

This is due to the fact that the owners of the nukes up to now have had something to lose. If terrorists of any adherence, especially those advocating the onset of Armageddon, obtain a nuke then all bets are off. They have no home or country or family they love, to lose.
