i hope it's a scenic route at least? good luck with the scan and hopefully its outcome would be fine. Nope, it's not the scenic route, not at 99.1 miles from Yermo to Corona, according to Bing the driving time is 1h:42m, Me I'm adding in another 28m, since I need to buy gas for the car and it's nearly 100 miles, so anything could happen, thankfully I have cruise control that works, even if the tach doesn't always work, right now for the 2nd day it's raining outside. Hello Friends, It is so nice to read the supportive and encouraging posts here, as Vic deals with new medical issues. I have always found the seti community to be so lovely and supportive. This is, however, a thread in Number Crunching, so technically we should all be staying (more or less) to technical issues. Vic has been posting in the Cafe about his medical issues and I would like to encourage people to post their well wishes there, so that this thread will wind its way back towards the interesting technical topic of computer builds. I am not going to hide or move any posts at this time. I'm just hoping that, going forward, this thread will trend towards being more technical in nature, as is typical of Number Crunching threads. OK. Well those CT scanners can be pretty compute intensive. It might be an opportunity to see some high end hardware in action and maybe mention the benefits of distributed computing to the radiographer... |

Ok, I just did some maintenance on My PNY LC 580 video card after hearing some strange noises, the stock PNY 120mm fan was failing, the PNY fan was running so slow that I could stop it with My finger and not get cut(42C without the fan running, and without Seti running), after much painful effort(My back), I got the fan replaced, with a Delta AFB-1212SH-F00 fan(as used by Dell), Digi-key rates this 3400rpm fan @ 113.1 cfm, I only got two screws on one side screwed in, but it's working, and yes I did vacuum the fan while it was powered down(it was filthy), I would have used the 120mm wire fan grill, but the PNY screws aren't long enough, since they are only long enough for a 25mm thick fan, which the Delta just happens to be. @ 772MHz, 45C is reported while crunching. @ 857MHz, 45-53C is reported while crunching, from what Afterburner says at least. @ 51MHz, 32C Idle for this fan... Though until I vacuum the radiator, which looks filthy, I'll keep the card at a lower speed, did I ever say I hate this case? Well sometimes I do. 45-47C is much better than 82C or even 94C that the old PNY fan was reporting. Except for the screw problem, the video card is fixed, the ram and two fans for the cpu radiator are next though not for today, one of the two 8GB ram dimms needs moving to a different slot, and the two fans need to be plugged into the motherboard directly. 857MHz is the stock speed of the PNY LC GTX580, LC = Liquid Cooled Note: These Delta fans are miss-wired, Dell has the red and black wires swapped(they are a royal pain in the neck for Me to rewire, so don't ever ask Me to help on these, My eyesight is not as good as it used to be), and yes they will slice nicely into human skin, so be careful! Anything further about Me personally, can be found in Cafe: Don't know where it should go? Stick it here! Part IV thread, this way I have less threads to keep track of. Alright, I can knock My PC off of My dusting list for a while, I vacuumed both radiators, the 120(gpu), and the 240(cpu), plus I got a few other surfaces that had dust that were easily doable, all while the power is on too. :p Though I still need to work on 3 fans, and the ram, just not today. My vacuum cleaner is a Sears Kenmore double insulated 5.1hp(peak) vacuum cleaner, back when these were made, My dad the Medic(WWII Europe), sold these for a living for a while. This cleaner is perfect for the type of carpet here, yeah I have carpet. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

i wonder what would be the rac on that server... if I ever get rich or get that much extra money, that's what i would be doing and spending my time on, building crunchers and telescopes... |

I wonder what would be the rac on that server... Me neither, it tends to bite Me in the back... Just getting on a weatherization waiting list to replace 3 windows, 2 doors, and an old gas central air heating/cooling system, was hard, sending the paperwork was easy, their main objection, that I had no broken windows that obviously leak air and heat, just like My current old windows do, through metal frames that bulge and don't seal anymore, and that leak heat in and out through those same metal frames(aluminum). ...broken windows can be "fixed", well "un-fixed" would probably be a better way of putting it ;-) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

That is true, but a bent aluminum frame I think can only be replaced today, with a vinyl framed dual pane window filled w/argon gas. 3 of those, last I looked, would cost $1,030.00, or $330.00 for the 2 narrow windows here, and $370.00 for the wider one, but then all 3 are custom sized, the prices might have gone up or down since I bought any replacement windows. Intel has a chip with 24 cores that costs $8,898 Intel's Xeon E7-8894 v4 is a monster server chip with 24 cores, 60MB of cache and a maximum clock frequency of 3.4GHz No Intel chip is as expensive as the new Xeon E7-8894 v4 server processor. |

My cpu water cooler sprung a leak, so until I can get an untested CoolerMaster 240L cpu water cooler on the Asus RIVE motherboard and make sure everything is dry inside, I will be largely offline, including tonight. I just hope a cooler swap is all that I need to do, I could swap the motherboard too, but I will see. There is no other choice at the moment, I'm just out of luck. I sure won't be buying another Alphacool 240 cpu water cooler. I am doing this post on My old phone. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Going water cooled is easier for Me to dust, and of course more heat is extracted too. I will have to use part of the Liheap check to get a replacement CoolerMaster 240 cpu cooler, since the current one needs new hoses and is out of warranty. The new one is about $100 or so before any shipping. Now as to removing "old leaky", I have removed 6 of 8 radiator screws, all cpu cooler & fan power cables, and I've yet to cook My breakfast, at least I washed all of the dirty dishes, now if only the Tylenol will kick in, My right shoulder and arm are hurting. I've removed "old leaky" completely, I found some water, I don't see any on the motherboard, any water that I've found was on a chipset heatsink, some was found at the base of the video card, most was found on the lower air filter and on one spot in the case near a fan, the fan was dry. I did find some dust on the air filter and a dead moth too. Now I need to uninstall the "used 240L cooler" that is installed on an EVGA X79 DARK Motherboard. If you are running top end processors heavily overclocked and stressed to the limits, then yes I can understand the need for liquid cooling. But you are not in that ballpark, so I don't quite understand why you see the need to go down that route. But your choice if you can afford the parts. watercooling is also to have a stock computer more silent with only one larger fan with less rpm/noise ;) |
