So, I can block the Win 10 upgrade to my Win 7 Pro PC by following the steps in the "Computer Configuration" part of your link? Question: What about Win 7 owners who run Windows Virtual PC in order to run Windows XP Mode ?? Would M$ DARE 'shut off' this Win 7 feature ? It used it to 'sell' Win 7 to business owners who wanted to keep running old XP programs. Step 1 says: Click Computer Configuration. How to you FIND "Computer Configuration?" I tried Start / Control Panel and other things on Win 7 Pro and find nothing? Perhaps I'm mistaken and its listed on something else from M$, or? :) Thank you! So, I can block the Win 10 upgrade to my Win 7 Pro PC by following the steps in the "Computer Configuration" part of your link? If you ask questions like that - better change your mind and: Use GWX Control Panel - the author (Ultimate Outsider) can be trusted. Just reading the docs/Guide shows for me he is knowledgeable and honest. It (GWX Control Panel) sets the same Settings described + can monitor if they are changed again by Windows at later time Reputation of the site (by users/visitors): https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/ultimateoutsider.com GWX_control_panel.exe scan (Detection ratio: 0 / 54) https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/d11ecbfbaaffc58d26594923cdd096defed0e081eeade05b65a4173f1866ad42/analysis/ If you still want the "manual way" (but it changes only one thing of many; and Windows update may change it back any time (people say)): Win+R gpedit.msc Policy path: Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update Setting: Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update (Do you understand the above? If not -go for GWX Control Panel) Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

Thank you for trying, but, at first look, the 'GWX Control Panel' web is as clear as mud. :( I wish I had the time to study it but do not. I find it difficult to understand WHY it has to be so murky? I would think if M$ truly wanted to offer you an 'out' from their insidious plans to destroy computers using other than its awful Win 10 it would do so. What this is telling me is that months and months of effort by many in removing or trying to remove all of the "KB upgrades" so they can keep the OS they want has all been WASTED and they will be forced into Win 10 despite their objections. I almost destroyed my PC trying to remove "KB updates." Also, as I posted, Win 7 WAS promoted by M$ by telling the huge number of XP Users that they could keep their treasured Win 7 programs if they would only buy the latest and greatest Win 7. So now, with this forced automatic Win 10 'upgrade' we lose that? Its awful and unfair. M$ did create Win Virtual PC but altho its a help, it did NOT allow ALL XP programs to run in Win 7. It shut off access to the hi-res graphics screen which killed a number of highly graphics intensive engineering programs that I, and others used. What an awful state of affairs. It's very discouraging. River Song (aka Linda Latte on planet Earth) "Happy I-Phone girl on the GO GO GO" |

I agree. I just skimmed the documentation. I installed it and it detected that I've been good at hiding bad updates. I like it. The Universe is not only stranger than you imagine, it's stranger than you can imagine. SETI@home classic workunits 1,405 CPU time 57,318 hours |

Not specifically win10 related.. but at the same time.. it's not unrelated. http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-starts-pushing-windows-10-as-a-recommended-update/ Microsoft is stepping up its Windows 10 push by making the OS a 'recommended' -- though not required -- update for Windows 7 and 8.1 users, beginning February 1. |

Yeah I completely broke my Windows update somehow, and I'm not too sad about that, lol. "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. And unlike most advice, it's backed up by proofs." -- Algorithms to live by: The computer science of human decisions. |

Immutable Rules of the PC ----------------------------- Rule #1 All rules herein are immutable Rule #2 M$ loves you and would never hurt you. Rule #3 If a rule is questioned see Rule #1 In regard M$... Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Big Brother, aka M$, and his minions look down their noses at you. You must comply! Resistance is futile. Obey, powerless human! You are a member of the hive. Submit and be assimilated. One SIMPLE question, OK? If M$ truly wanted to treat you fairly, and not abuse its power over you, why not put a "check box" under Start / Control Panel / System & Security / Windows Update ? It would say: Allow no change to my OS if this box is unchecked. In regard "cures and fixes" for undesired actions by M$. A check box is ALL that is needed. Any "fixes" on par with a "doctoral dissertation" are more a turn-off than a turn-on. If a complex set of instructions is proposed that works, at this moment in time, to obfuscate M$. It is certain M$ will see it and institute changes requiring a new set of instructions. M$ has absolute power over your PC. He loves you and only wants to save you from yourself and your foolish ways. In the limit, the perversity of M$ tends to infinity. I would propose a corollary: Any good fix to undesired updates is the essence of simplicity. No offense intended, but, IMHO, "fixes" to thwart the will of M$ is, just possibly, an exercise in futility. It's like doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. The "fixes" only give you hope until M$ brings you back to reality. River Song (aka Linda Latte on planet Earth) "Happy I-Phone girl on the GO GO GO" |

-[ snip ]- Greetings Linda, Non taken. :) My reality does not correlate with Micro$ofts reality. My reality is that my PC is MY PC. I paid for the parts to build it, not M$. If they want claim to it, they better fork over some moola, and a lot of it. ;) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. My reality is that my PC is MY PC. I paid for the parts to build it, not M$. But you paid only for a license of Windows, Microsoft can retract that license, or like they're doing here, they can change that license to a newer version. Long or short, the Windows on your system is never yours, doesn't matter if you paid several hundreds of dollars for it, or only tens. It's always Microsoft's and thus they can do with it what they want. |

My reality is that my PC is MY PC. I paid for the parts to build it, not M$. Hi Jord, I would tend to disagree with that assessment. Micro$soft may "own" one of the OSs on my PC, but they do not own MY PC. I only run their property because 99.9 percent of other software only runs on Window$ simply because that is what Micro$oft wants. I cannot run WoW or STO on other OSs, so I'm stuck with their crappy POS of an OS. Micro$oft does NOT own my PC, I do. :) Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? My reality is that my PC is MY PC. I paid for the parts to build it, not M$. We think alike! hahahhahaha I think the sentiments you express denote a firm foothold on reality. M$ will do as it pleases. They can only be influenced by loss of $$. They could care less about your personal feelings or beliefs. As more and more PC Users switch to Linux or Mac, they will change their tune. A sad state of affairs, but reality "sucks" at times. :( They can easily outwit and outflank anyone who dares to try to thwart their wishes. Micro$soft may "own" one of the OSs on my PC, but they do not own MY PC. I didn't say that they owned your PC, just that they own the Windows on your PC and because you agreed with the EULA of the license on it, Microsoft is allowed to do with it (the license) what they want. Simple. |

http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-starts-pushing-windows-10-as-a-recommended-update/ Bit of a warning, is what people are finding out: Despite having Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates disabled in Windows Update settings, people find that this optional but recommended Windows 10 upgrade comes in and is checked by default. For people who do want to continue receiving Windows Updates, HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate DWORD: DisableOSUpgrade, value: 1 still seems to be blocking it. |

Next one is out, kb3135445. Another one to make certain that never installs on your machine. Also kb2952664 is back once again for the xnth time. Both are optional. |
