I saw a movie in 'Cinerama' when I was a boy called 'Windjammer' it followed the life in a year of the S/S Christian Radich from Oslo one of many of the 'School Ships' from Europe and the US. A really inspiring film that I still remember today. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052397/ "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

A friend is currently serving as Mate on the sail training ship Pelican of London. Sorry no pics - the only ones I've got are really grotty (fog, and using the iron topsail.....). Here a few picture of the boat I sailed around on. This is anchored in the Bahamas. Water was about 6 foot deep. We had to wait for the tide to come in to cross a sand bar. Here we are getting the bottom cleaned in Ft Lauderdale In Balboa Panama waiting to cross the canal Panama Canal lock door closing on us. Being chased by the Coast Guard. We were south of Cuba and heading to Panama. This coast guard (Navy Destroyer) played cat and mouse with us for hours. Guess they were worried that we were running drugs from the US to Columbia. Me playing pirate in Nassau, home of the real Blackbeard. Oh I am the one with the black beard You have to love the trade winds, and the free beer. The man with me was French and me well sort of Spanish (decent). We went around the harbor in my inflatable being pirates and capturing boats. We would then hold them for beer ransom. (We would not leave until we were given beer, hold outs got to hear us sing the Disney pirate song). We became so notorious that by the third day people were hold out six packs whenever we came by. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We extort and pilfer, we filch and sack. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. Maraud and embezzle and even highjack. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We kindle and char and enflame and ignite. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. We burn up the city, we're really a fright. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. We're rascals and scoundrels, we're villains and knaves. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. We're devils and black sheep, we're really bad eggs. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. Yo ho, you ho, a pirate's life for me. We're beggars and blighters and ne'er do-well cads, Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads, Drink up me 'earties, yo ho. |

A Zumwalt class Stealth Destroyer, the USS Zumwalt DDG1000.. I had no clue that one was even being built. I had read that the navy was planning one. Thanks Vic for the pic
Old James |

A Zumwalt class Stealth Destroyer, the USS Zumwalt DDG1000.. No problem James, from what I have read, She has a crew of 142, about half of the previous class, which had 314 personnel aboard.. The Bow though looks like something straight from Teddy Roosevelts Great White Fleet that circumnavigated the globe over a century back. A Zumwalt class Stealth Destroyer, the USS Zumwalt DDG1000.. Im wondering how that bow can handle waves. My instinct says its going to be a wet ship. Lots of water over the deck. Maybe Donald can weigh in on that:)
Old James |

Im wondering how that bow can handle waves. My instinct says its going to be a wet ship. Lots of water over the deck. Haven't really been paying attention to the design discussions. From the periscope, they're all big grey targets. Supposedly the models showed that that bow shape will cut the waves as well as the older design, plus the angular bow and superstructure will deflect surface-search radar, making it harder for the enemy to see them coming. This class will also have a keel bulb at the bow below the waterline, similar to aircraft carriers and supertankers, to provide stability in rough seas. A Zumwalt class Stealth Destroyer, the USS Zumwalt DDG1000.. Maybe, all I know is there will be only 3 ships built, why? Costs started to spiral out of control after funding for 32 ships was cut to 10, then 7, then to 3, at least according to the wiki. Instead the US Navy wants to build 8 more of the older Arleigh Burke class Destroyers.. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |
