Microsoft skips 9 and jumps to 10. Might be something I might now be interested in getting. http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/microsoft-skips-windows-9its-now-windows-10.html I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

And if they actually release a desktop OS for desktops I may consider it. Instead of trying to force desktop users to use a tablet OS. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

Actually, Windows 8.1 was meant to be Windows 9. The unhappy base caused 9 to be rushed out the door. Billy couldn't accept giving away a free OS so he called it 8.1... |

And if they actually release a desktop OS for desktops I may consider it. Instead of trying to force desktop users to use a tablet OS. It's my understanding that the install will be device dependent. In other words, if you have a desktop w/ keyboard & mouse now, it will be installed with the start menu and classic desktop view. If you have any device that uses a touchscreen, including a desktop, then you get what 8.1 is now. If you have a hybrid tablet, you'll switch to tablet mode when the keyboard is detached. From all of the rumors & leaks that I've read, you should be able to switch back & forth with a touchscreen desktop. I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

Win 10 From what I've read corporations will get first crack at it for review. One of the main reasons that companies didn't move to Win7 was that they didn't want to expend the time and costs to migrate/upgrade their software mainly because of drivers, etc., -8/8.1 was totally out of the question, and stuck with Win95. M$S took that in account, and -10 is supposed to have rectified the problem by allowing any 32-bit application that ran on any previous OS to run on the new OS. If it takes users to use the classic menus and Win7 look so be it as long as it gets people off of '95. I don't buy computers, I build them!! |

And if they actually release a desktop OS for desktops I may consider it. Instead of trying to force desktop users to use a tablet OS. Windows 8 really dumbed down a lot of features & removed others that I consider must haves for a desktop OS. So I only use Windows 8 at work when I am absolutely forced to do so & I already use Classic Shell. It doesn't do enough to get the Windows 8 ick off of the OS. Then I promptly ghost back to a real OS once I am done & then consider using the emergency shower station. I think Windows 8 would probably be OK to use it on a tablet, but the desktop is not where that OS belongs. What sort of overhead does a shell like this cost a system? None, it's just the "missing" start menu and only needs resources, if it is opened, just like the "original". Aloha, Uli |

What sort of overhead does a shell like this cost a system? If anything I think it makes the systems faster. There is a small footprint of memory it uses, but that can vary based on how you configure it. I configure it for the Classic style. Win 10 Just finished reading up on the announcement. First impressions... looks bulletproof! If MS can pull this off without a hitch (huge task obviously) then from what I've been reading there'll be no-one left* to complain. They are getting everyone sorted. Seriously... everyone. And allegedly STARTING from enterprise. One Windows to (not rule them all but) to customize into anything and any device you want. What's not to like? A lot of this stuff shoulda been in 7, let alone 8. * Well, except for the M$ crowd, I'm sure they'll find something to complain about:) |

What I just heard, is that the reason they are using Windows 10, instead of Windows 9, is that older programs that were Windows 95, 98 compatible looked for Windows 9x, and if they saw it, they would install. They had to jump numbers to prevent that from happening. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

They had to jump numbers to prevent that from happening. That would be a weird installer. Most use the OS version to determine the OS for installation. With Windows 7 being v6.1 & Windows ME being v4.90. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

They had to jump numbers to prevent that from happening. I'm going to agree with Hal here. Windows 9'x reported version to all installers is v4.xx. There's no way an installer will confuse Windows 9x with Windows 9. Windows "9x" was just a marketing name as Microsoft was on a kick with using years the software was released to indicate how old it was and made you want to upgrade. We may likely never get an explanation for the jump in numbers, but the naming scheme has been inconsistent for years. Some are saying they jumped to 10 to really separate themselves from 8. Some are saying they just want to catch up to Apple's OS X (technically 10). Some are saying they wanted to call it Windows One in an attempt to remain consistent with all other MS products out right now (e.g. OneDrive, Xbox One, etc), but didn't want to use it because Windows 1.0 shipped back in 1985. Whatever the reasoning is (and what's in a name, really?), I just hope we get a solid desktop OS. I actually enjoy Windows 8.1, but I would love to see the Start Menu back. |
