Message 1542258 - Posted: 15 Jul 2014, 22:37:54 UTC

It is that bittersweet time again where I must make the very difficult decision on who to cut and who to add to a great team (names in a hat help to relieve me of having to make that decision!). This means we lose a little bit of experience, but gain fresh faces and new views.

So with that, I want to thank Rob Smith, another longtime Mod with lots of experience, and Lynn, a relative newcomer to the team, both of whom spent many, many hours of their personal time to help manage the flow of our forums. I would like to offer a very personal thank you to each of them for their time and dedication, and I hope that the both of you might be available again in the future for volunteering again, if you're not frightened away from the experience. :-D

Coming onboard is two former Mods: Julie and Es99! After much bribery (and cake!), I have tricked, erm, I mean they have graciously accepted to help manage the forums from our little madhouse. I hope that everyone gives them a very warm, hearty, SETIzen welcome! (Put away the Nerf bats!)

I know this is going to be a great team!

Time for relaxing massages, spa treatments and being waited on hand and foot!! :) Thankyou Rob and Lynn! In the short time I've been a setizen, I've needed many a rescue from my own gaffes and you've both been great and very patient with what must have seemed like a very s-l-o-w learner on your hands! :)

Welcome aboard Julie and Es99. :-)

oh sh*t..I got new buttons.

I really hope Rob and Lynn are on standby here to come back when it all goes horribly wrong.

Some one promised me cake and all of a sudden this.

It reminds me of the time the maths department took me out for a drink and I woke up the next day with a hangover and the job of "Cross Curricular Science and Maths Co-Ordinator". There was no extra pay for that one either.

Firstly congratulations to both Julie and ES99 for returning back to duty from the reserves list, that must have cost Fred a shed load of cake to fiddle, er um I mean of course expertly accomplish! Sincere thank you's are also in order to both Lynn and Rob, who have served valiantly on our behalf in recent times, and given freely of their time and energy. I think the important point here is that this is not a final goodbye, as Fred has already said

"and I hope that the both of you might be available again in the future for volunteering again"

So have a well deserved rest both of you and we may see you again some time on the other side of the fence :-)

I would take this opportunity to comment upon the current mod team mix of 3 ladies and 4 men, which I think is a good gender balance. My experience over many years here is that male mods can sometimes come down too hard too soon, whereas female mods tend to give a little more leeway before the hammer falls, but when it does, you'll certainly know about it! A combination of the two outlooks is going to make this new team firm but fair, and maybe a tad tougher on the boundaries.

I think it was effectively if somewhat inelegantly summed up in the 007 film Tomorrow Never Dies, when Jeffrey Palmer's Admiral Roebuck says to Judi Dench

"Sometimes "M" I don't think you have the balls for this job."
"M" replies "Maybe, but at least I don't have to think with them all the time!"

Good luck to everyone!

Damn, since my return to the project in 2007, I've seen mods come & go but those two have set some high standards of moderation so sorry to see them go.

Let's hope their replacements achieve the same standards.
