I don't know what the percentage of cars running on diesel in the U.S. is, but I'd hazard a guess fewer than 10%. That said, I was talking to someone a few weeks ago about diesel, and supposedly there are two kinds of diesel fuel. There is the commercial grade sold at the filling stations in the city, and then there's the "farm grade" sold out in the country, that is cheaper, but if you get caught putting that version in your car, you get in trouble. For the rest of the world that speak proper English, Gas = Petrol No. We must keep things "PG-13 rated" here. So, you could type "f&^%" as a substitute for the f-word. TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

I don't think there is any difference in the fuel itself, just the taxes that are lumped in with the price. As fuel sold for farm use does not include the taxes to support road maintenance and construction. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Percentage of cars in the US running diesel is growing. About 40% of new cars sold in Europe are now Diesel powered. There is more energy in a gallon of diesel than a gallon of gasoline. About 30% more. I get about 50 mpg from my little Audi. Now that the US has ultra low sulfur diesel, it's growing in popularity. As for "farm grade" diesel it's proper name is off road diesel. It is exactly the same as the diesel you buy for use on the road except that it is dyed red and since it's sold for off road use it's sold without highway taxes. In California that means over $1 less per gallon. But it will stain your tank, injectors and intake. Police look for the staining at highway check stations. It's not just for farm equitment it's for any off road equitment. We have it on site for use in generators, earth movers and just about everything else that stays off of the road. We also have clear diesel for use by on road trucks. it's also sold for heating oil. |

The smallest cost for Diesel fuel around here is $3.899 a gallon @ Food for Less. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |
