Open All Hours
Twenty Four Seven

Tale of the Tape

"Clegg fears his party may be wiped out in May's European elections."

"Nigel Farage has a rare gift for a modern politician of sounding like a human being. Some assume his breezy, populist style masks a poor grasp of detail but he is rarely caught out on Europe. Despite the common caricature of him as a Little Englander, he has a better handle than many Westminster-based politicians on the nuances of EU politics."

Looking forward to the 2nd April :-)

Oh dear, for such a trusted and unbiased broadcaster such as the BBC, big cock up here.

Advertised on the link above as being broadcast simultaneously on 2/4/14, we suddenly see this today.......

Nickerless & Nigel clash

Interesting report but love one comment...

"Didn't see the whole programme but Farage comes across as infinitely more impressive than Clegg at the personal level. Suspect that Farage will have won votes tonight and Clegg will have lost them. But no surprise I guess-such a lot of the things Clegg says and does will cost his party.."

Well i knew it was on LBC yesterday, didn't catch it because i was at an orchestra rehearsal for a concert tonight, but i knew it was on because they spent about half an hour discussing it on the Today programme yesterday morning.

Full debate can be watched on YouTube here.

Oh dear, LBC broadcast:

LBC host the first leaders' debate on Britain's future in Europe.

Leader of the Lib Dems Nick Clegg went head-to-head with UKIP's Nigel Farage in a live hour-long programme, hosted by Nick Ferrari in front of a live audience.

While BBC plan to broadcast a similar debate on April 2nd:

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg and UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage debate Britain's membership of the European Union. Presented by David Dimbleby with questions from the studio audience.

If there's a cock up here it's not by the BBC.

The original link stated that both broadcasts would be simultaneous on 2nd April. It was updated at 21:40 last night with subtle changes, so the cock-up wasn't here :-)

I remember something like that happening before! Who was it now who removed loads of innacurate stuff from their website...? Pre-election pledges (that didn't give a mandate to govern but ended up with them governing anyway) sort of comes to mind? There's a name coming into my head...

D...? div...? Divhead? Divhead Camewrong was it? :)

Hmm, what link would that be? The page Google cached of the link (prior to those subtle updates), doesn't appear to support your statement:

Nick Clegg is about to go head to head with Nigel Farage in the first of two debates about whether Britain should stay in the EU.

There is this from earlier in the month, which does not mention an LBC debate, though perhaps one hadn't been arranged at the time.

Late to the party as usual. Will you be late at your funeral then?

The original report stated both broadcasts to be simultaneous on 2nd April, which to anyone with any common sense would assume that both will be broadcast on radio & tv at the same time.

& as for your link, sorry it was known about....copied from your link.....

There is this from earlier in the month, which does not mention an LBC debate, though perhaps one hadn't been arranged at the time.

"Mr Clegg last month challenged the UKIP leader to a debate on his weekly phone-in programme on LBC radio, which will also host a clash between the two party leaders."

Which shows your statement to be incorrect.

Maybe arrive early at the next party hmmn.....

Apologies, I missed that the earlier BBC article did mention an LBC debate.

You say that the original report stated both broadcasts to be simultaneous on 2nd April, I provided a link to a copy of that article cached before your post, it does not provide support to your statement. You allege a cock-up at the BBC, though without supporting evidence isn't it more plausible to believe that the error lies elsewhere?

Suggest you try and find a "cached google copy of the Original Post" which was posted at 09:30 that day.

Secondly, Bobby stop being a Booby by making inferences. I may be a dumb Irishman, but I can read & certainly understand the word "Simultaneously"

Maybe you do not?

Thirdly, as well known & often pointed out , it has been known for journalists to err. Are you saying they do not?

Perhaps for you there is little difference between a journalist making an error and "Oh dear, for such a trusted and unbiased broadcaster such as the BBC, big cock up here". Perhaps it was an error that lead to the page being updated about 18 hours before your opening post here.

As for me finding an earlier copy of the page, as it's your claim it's on you to do that.

A question for our resident local politician for when he returns (even though he is lurking).....

After being publicly castigated here for calling our politicians "muppets"....

..Will he castigate those "muppets" for this?

Dunces vs Muppets at PMQ's

"In exchanges on the price of Royal Mail shares, Mr Miliband said the PM was "not so much the 'Wolf of Wall Street' as the 'dunce of Downing Street'"."

"Despite their efforts the sessions have continued to revert to form, with insults being exchanged and a bear pit atmosphere. It continues to be the single most watched political event of the week."

Oh absolutely, it is more entertaining than the crap currently broadcast as entertainment!

To be fair the language was challenged,

Asked later if the word "Muppets" was the kind of language the prime minister should be using in Parliament, his spokesman said: "PMQs is a unique parliamentary occasion. It has been the way it has been for many years."

I find the use of the word demeans the users who cannot put a point across without sinking to a "schoolboy" level. PM included.(You know he only did it to get a laugh)

However just because the two of them exchange insults at this level doesn't mean you have to.

I stopped reading the posts here because even if I didn't respect some one, calling them a "muppet" or worse would actually just bring me down to their level.

Now that our resident politican has returned, albeit five days early, would he care to answer this as he has been banging his drum loudly over his party being the best for Britain....

PM says clegg & Farage "Extremists"

...now that is a first for the UK....

A Prime minster calling his Deputy an extremist.

Ooops, looks like the lib-dems will disappear from government next year then :-)

Appears that UKIP is getting an awful lot of good free publicity here....just what
they wonted. Has there been a tactical miscalculation by someone else here though?

Yes, Del-boy & miscalculated badly.

Many tory members agree with some of what Farage has been saying yet Del-boy rubbishes it just like Cleggie and his cronies.

The door will be left wide open for Liebour in 2015, & that is just what the country does not need!

...and I have a very funny feeling that someone high up in government is
feeding Farage some very-very-very privileged information on things.
