The long term answer is better education. And better public transit. Don't understand your question. Has the clamp down you mention resulted in a reduction in deaths or accidents related to impaired driving? Did the clamp down include any increased education on the perils of impaired driving? |

Not what I expected from you. Okay... Increased advertisements on TV, increased police presence & roadside stops. No it hasn't stopped at all. So again, what long term education are you suggesting? |

Better education, apparently. If you are not getting results, try changing your methods. There have been lots of studies showing that increased sentencing has little effect on people's behaviour. Unless you are willing to take these people off the streets, and have them live at taxpayers expense in jail for very long periods of time, you need to find another way. |

Some ideas and discussion are posted in http://www.roadsafetyanalysis.org/2014/09/is-this-the-end-of-the-golden-era-of-casualty-reduction/ The clearest correlation appears to be "arrange for a recession in the country's economy, because that reduces the volume of road traffic". |

For gods sake, half the population can't drive properly when stone cold sober, even less when stoned! This is where, quite often, you let yourself down & prevent many of your posts from earning a well deserved +1. So, using your style, please provide actual statistics to back that statement up! As a fair guess, I can dispute that statement just by using what you have made public: - 420,000 divided by 50 years = an average of 8,400 per annum. Compare that to an average of 85,000/100,000 per annum. Who would have a better sense of the percentage of "useless" drivers? |

My best wishes go out to those affected by this,..... ..., but when I read that bit my sick Aussie humour kicked in, and I thought,..... ..., "Did he miss the 3:10 to Yuma?" Sorry, but, Cheers. :-) |

I can't help it...the laughter is too much, need some air... Just shows you how much of a car culture we have here. It probably never even occurred to them that they might not be able to drive there, or that there might be a way other than driving to get there. If they'd been from New York, or Seattle, or even California, then maybe. But from Texas, no way. The car is king there even more than in Cal. Still, it's pretty stupid of the nav system to not tell them. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

California I will be interested to see the NTSB's analysis of the crumple zone design of Metrolink's new cars, developed after the last coouple of wrecks they had. Significantly, did the new design lead to the lack of deaths in this case? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

NTSB has released a preliminary Executive Summary of the New York Metro North wreck earlier this month. They found twelve 39' sections of the third rail inside the lead car of the train and are investigating how this came to be. They are also testing the interior of the car to see if it met fire protection standards. Still, it's pretty stupid of the nav system to not tell them. Yes, that is a big issue. Ask your nav system how to get to the USS Arizona memorial and it happily tells you, you can, when you aren't on the island in the middle of the Pacific. |

California And released without charges ... http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2015/02/26/no-charges-filed-against-truck-driver-accused-in-metrolink-train-crash/ The district attorney’s office announced Thursday that a 54-year-old truck driver will not face charges in connection to the Metrolink train crash. |

Can't think where else to put this The service is an alternative to a postal plea or attending court and has been used by more than 1,200 people during the Manchester trial. How long has the trial been running, a week? Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

I just realized when this news broke yesterday that I could well have been on his jury if he had had one. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |
