Julie.

If your rat was coming in through the toilet, it would have a large climb through a vertical sewer pipe to the second floor, and a water filled U-bend to negotiate. Sounds much more likely to be the open window. Have a look on the outside wall, are there ledges and pipes that it could climb up. If it was still in your flat there would be some evidence of it somewhere. If there is a local rat population then it would pay not to leave windows open.

No evidence whatsoever. Will check the outside wall when I get home and put some other bait in that trap! I did clearly hear and see her!

We had a mouse once in our home.
It came through an old chimney in the third floor.
After 2 days of hunting i shot him/her.
My neighbours were a little scared of the noise but my wife was so hysterical........

Her?

OK lets think sideways here, literally. I take it you have flats above and below you, and to either side? Do they have any rat sightings? Any holes in skirting boards behind cupboards, under the sink? Any holes in floors or the ceilings? It just seems odd that you could have an adult hungry rat somewhere and not know it somehow. Close all windows for 24 hours and see what happens then.

Gotta be a sensible answer to this ....

I know! It's driving me crazy. A couple of weeks ago Lisa and I both heard a plate falling on the floor and break, Jeroen went looking and there was nothing... I heard something grate my bed last week, I heard something run over de ground at night once, things that are thrown of my cupboard in the morning. I am not crazy! I REALLY heard and saw those thing. Jeroen saw 'the rat' he never drinks or smokes or anything and he was pretty darn sure! We left salami and bread now, nothing... So a sensible answer you say? Dunno...

[edit] Nobody reported any rats here, or other vermin. Could be some animal from the woods nearby too, oh and there's a rainpipe next to the window.

[edit2] Jeroen and Lisa both don't drink or take any medication, I take one sipralexa (100mg, I think) a day and 50mg seroquel... And a couple of beers of course:)

Julie's got a poltergeist? Have they swapped the knives and forks around in the cutlery drawer yet? :)

Easier said than done:) I don't think it's there anymore (I hope). The door is open now but the kids will stay another night in my room, just to be sure...

I feel so bad. Last night I took up all the cat food so there was
nothing for the raccoons to eat. I did leave a small amount of
dry dog and cat food outside in a dish, so there was something.

I know someone came inside because the water in the bowl was
dirty and there were raccoon footprints on the table.

I wonder how long before they stop coming in.
