Message 1370927 - Posted: 23 May 2013, 14:22:55 UTC - in response to Message 1370911.

About 20 years ago I was commuting to and from central London, and getting a bus home from the nearest railway station. Quite often I had just missed the bus which was at 20 minute intervals, so I used to nip over to the pub on the corner for a quick beer, whilst waiting for the next one. At that time I went through a phase of liking Newcastle brown, nicknamed Newquay (pronounced Newkey) but the pub had some on the shelf, and others on the cold shelf. If it's too cold it loses all the flavour.

One day I went in, and serving me was the landlady of ample proportions that you wouldn't want to argue with. I said "Can I have a warm Newquay please?". She drew her self up to her full statuesque height, and in the best Lady Bracknell voice boomed out "What did you just say?" Quaking in my boots I meekly replied "Could I have a warm bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale please". After a pregnant pause, she then dissolved into laughter and said "OMG, I thought you just asked me for some warm nookie!". I always got a grin from her after that :-) The pub is still there, but changed hands long ago.

Yes, quite a tale, Chris, glad it ended well....

A good, and appreciative, pallet to own, Bernie ....

Did you mean palate?

I can't say anything about black pudding, having never had it.

Oh, I dunno about that .....
Grilled Spam, cheese, and a slice of tomato on toasted bread, and a glass of a good beer would make a fine lunch. Or would the pint of Landlord be dessert....

Yes, they do call beer "liquid bread".
But if I'm going to drink my lunch, I prefer a Porter or a Stout. Fortunately, it has been many years since I last had a "liquid lunch", and that afternoon did not end well....

+1 it's called pacing yourself, so you can go out with a flourish!

Then again too much, and you could get a face full of floor polish!

Hey that's actually quite good ....

Yes, well, that was my intent....
Just before I retired from the Navy. Been on my feet over 36 hours (24-hour duty day plus 4 hours day shift), let some of my crew take me to lunch at the Club rather than go straight to the barracks, clean up and have a nap. Kitchen was slow that day, we were on the 2nd round when I conked out. Woke up safe in my bed 12 hours later, my uneaten lunch in the refrigerator. Could have been worse, I suppose......

So now I always make sure I eat before I finish the 1st pint....

I haven't got much problems with not eating and drinking beer but with porto, it gets quite messy so I've experienced...

Message 1371482 - Posted: 24 May 2013, 19:47:08 UTC - in response to Message 1371470.

A glass or two of decent Port is only sensibly imbibed at the end of a drinking session, shortly before retiring to ones bed. Trying to drink beer after that is just not advised. Also there is the old axiom "Never mix grape and grain", and a slightly ruder one that goes "beer before wine feeling fine....wine before beer feeling queer".

Another lesson I learned early. When taken with food, I can handle both beer and wine, but not, under any circumstances, can I mix beer or wine with hard liquor. So usually what I start out drinking, I stay with. And I stay well clear of anything with ouzo, rum, or tequila in it.....

Mixing the basic types of alcohol, beer, wine, whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, together is not a very good thing to do! As for aperitifs and the ouzos and tequilas of this world, your funeral :-)

No, by avoiding ouzo, rum, and tequila, I'm trying to delay my funeral as long as possible! The few times I've indulged in any one of them, I awoke the next morning thinking I was dying...

Over here we have the same saying only the other way around. Beer before wine is poison and wine before beer is fine.( Bier voor wijn is venijn, wijn voor bier is plezier)

Now that's interesting! I wonder why two fairly close countries have the opposite views on mixing alcohol? Is their a chemist in the house that can give us a technical answer?

Could be Belgians react differently on alcohol than Englishmen...;)

Y'know I never really thought of it in that way before! Now you got me really intrigued. Oh my gosh, it seems that the only sensible way forward now is to carry out a suitable experiment, under expert supervision of course, in order to ascertain the accuracy or otherwise of that theory. Don't wait up, we have a spare key ;-))
