On the GTX 580 I can do 3 wu's at a time with the Lunatics app and the 3 wu's take up about 950MB, yet from what I remember I could not do more than 2 wu's per gpu on the GTX 590 as they took up about 1000MB or so, which seems strange to Me, they should both use the same amount of ram on each gpu, regardless if this is a 580 or a 590 or a 690 card...

MM are you forgetting about windows itself ! what card is displaying the screen ? which 1 has priority 580 or 590 for the screen to display desktop could that be where the extra 50 meg comes from

The amount of ram is approximate for the 590 as this has been a while since I had a working 590, I have one on the shelf, but it has a waterblock for another PC.

Consider them in separate systems with windows 7 x64 as the OS.

Vic used to have a cruncher with four 590s in it, now he has a cruncher with a single 580. (Whatever happened to the Octo-cruncher?)
I think what he's asking is "How much GPU memory does a task running on a GPU take?".
The answer is - It varies...
On my 460 it would appear to be about 300Mb, so the two tasks running are occupying about 600Mb - but that includes the display, so its a bit less.
On my 690s (different machine) three tasks are occupying about 750Mb on three of the four processors, and about 800Mb on the fourth (the one driving the screen).

All the cards are running at between 90 and 99% GPU usage, so there's little point in loading another task. And I must sort the cooling on the 690s - they are running a bit hot for my liking with stock speed and cooling...

Yeah that's what I was asking and yes I still have the Octo, I just got the motherboard back from having some water blocks installed, I'm waiting until October before I can have a proper case for that PC(a Corsair 900D), I have a 590 card with a block attached, a 690 water block and 2 other 590 blocks, all 4 blocks are made by Koolance and both 590 and 690 blocks line up I'm told, I asked Koolance tech support.

All are used, bought one part at a time, a case though will be new, My income generally doesn't go far enough for more than $300 without a short term loan, plus some luck on ebay, plus to make room in My monthly expenditures, I have to buy some things like food(canned powdered eggs) in advance of when I need them to make the budget work.

1-Zotac Infinity Edition GTX580
2-Zotac Omni upgrade kits(for a 480 or 570 or 580 card)
1-EVGA Koolance equipped GTX590
2-Koolance 590 waterblocks
1-Koolance 690 waterblock

Sorry if yer jealous and no I'm not rich(I wish I were), I have no debt(normally), no credit card(s) and very few bills which cost almost nothing, low rent doesn't hurt, but then I live in a desert area of CA.

From my experience,

For 590:
Go for 3 when shorties, go for 2 when normal, and go for 1 when AP.

For 580:
Go for 3 all the time, except with AP.

No AP done here, no problem, I wish I could do 3 all the time on a 590 as I do on the 580.

My experience is identical to yours. My 2 580's run three at a time, all day, no problem. Like you, when I got the 590's, I figured three at a time (6 per card) would be the setup. It simply wouldn't work. 3 would run, but at times so slow it was a waste of effort. At the time, it was suggested to me that the problem was in the power management of the 590 card. In order to make everything work without burning the card up, NVidia somehow throttled the 590, thereby reducing it's efficiency. Not a technical explanation, but then, I'm not really a techie. Two per core on the 590 is the best I've ever been able to do, here or on Einstein.

Yeah it's like the count on a 590 is set at .25 instead of .50(where I had set the count, tried 3 there and the PC was almost unusable) and I'm wondering if the lunatics app sees 1536MB or 3072MB and 1 or 2 gpus on a GTX590?

Throttling I can do that to the 580, it's a memory usage issue...

Yeah a lot of those early 590's cooked themselves and even those where made from 2 already down clocked 580 cores (the heat produced is just ridiculous) and then they down clocked them again plus added heavier thermal limits. :-O

It takes a lot to keep them cool.

Cheers.

Boinc sees it as 2 GPUs each one with half the total ram...
If you set the count at 0.5 you will be running 4 tasks (2 per GPU)...

Well the app sure uses more ram there on the 590 than it does on the same type of gpu on a 580, as except for speed, there not any different.

Ive found that my GTX690 was also using more memory (in each GPU) than my GTX680, checking the config Ive found that the SLI (also displayed as multi-GPU feature with latest drivers) was enabled. After disabling it, the memory usage went down at the same level than in the 680...
May be it's the same for the 590...

Doubt it, I never ran sli nor did I have more than one GTX590 on air(a single 1598), I just recently bought the 2nd 590(a 1596, My 1st) and I have no way to run it on air, as it has a Koolance water block attached and no air cooling parts were received when I bought the card. Both 590's are EVGA, I've never owned a non EVGA 590.

A single 590 is a double GPU and both GPUs (that share the same circuit board) can work in SLI mode...
