Interesting articles about raccoons escaping from and back into zoos. Raccoons are good at investigating their surroundings, so if they want out of someplace they will studiously work to achieve that goal. On the other hand, raccoons will exert the least amount of energy possible to get a good meal, so I can see why zoos may not seem like prisons to some raccoons. And as for Scarecrow's furry tabby friend, Fuzzy-butt, I am pretty convinced that FB and our Spawnie were twins, separated at birth. ID: 1370103 ·

I'm guessing it either tried and failed, or was afraid, to jump with the lid closed. Last week the lid was left off, and the garage door open, for a few hours while we worked outside. The next day my wife opened the lid to get some bird seed, and a very anxious chipmunk came out at a high rate of speed (my wife used a much more colourful term).
