Hello friends!

I figured it was high time I actually posted a raccoon update in the Raccoon Update thread.

Eric took this picture of Magoo tonight.

Like little Izzy from a former litter, both Marcel and Magoo have learned to climb the rail that runs around the window well in our backyard. The part of the rail that runs near our back door gives these little beggars an unobstructed view of my kitchen, so of course that is where they tend to park their lazy behinds. Such a position ensures them dinner, as who could possibly pass by those mournful raccoon eyes and not reach for a scoop of cat food and a cluster or two of grapes?

We see Marcel and Magoo, our bachelor brothers, with great regularity these days... a little too regularly for Eric's taste. Donna is long gone. This is normal and natural for this time of year. We assume she is off somewhere nursing a litter of kits. In all probability we will not see her again. A mama raccoon as young as Donna is unlikely to have the size, strength and cunning to claim and defend our backyard as her own. I also would be surprised if Gigi returns this year, given that at some time after she established her territory last summer, she had the misfortune to break one of her front legs. This would give her a distinct disadvantage this year, assuming of course, that despite her broken leg, she still found enough food and avoided/resisted diseases to live another year. Mother Nature is a harsh mistress.

In all probability, some big, bad, dominant female raccoon from a prior litter of babies will claim our backyard this summer. Perhaps this will be the year that Izzy returns? The first thing that big, bad mama raccoon will do is kick Marcel and Magoo right out!!! No mother raccoon would tolerate bachelor brothers near her babies. The process of "encouraging" those two to leave might take several nights, but eventually some mama raccoon will scare and/or scar Marcel and Magoo so badly that they will not dare to ever return again. Some raccoons are slow learners. As regular readers of this thread may recall, a few years back Interloper Mama had to work long and hard to convince Arthur that he should go away and never ever return! Eventually he got the message.

Marcel and Magoo's days of sloth and lethargy are numbered. They just don't know it yet...

You sound like you're writing the outline for upcoming episodes of a soap opera.
