What is it about cities that frighten you Jim? I tense up in crowds, not enough to call it a phobia, and I am not terribly fond of the issues that come with large cities.. but what is the biggest fear about cities? Janice |

What is it about cities that frighten you Jim? I tense up in crowds, not enough to call it a phobia, and I am not terribly fond of the issues that come with large cities.. but what is the biggest fear about cities? There are just to many Nuts with Guns in the city and they don't know how to use them. Flying bullets don't care who they hit. Every time we go to the city you hear sirens and gunfire. Once when I was talking to DogBytes on the phone in Vegas He had to hit the floor because 9 shots rang out from across the road...I could hear them over the Phone. I have been mugged in a city and my wife's cousin even had bars put on all of her doors and windows and Steel doors for safety. Folks in cities will hurt you any way they can, With Guns, Clubs, Knives or just beat a person to death for a few Dollars or Cents. Some will even steal a persons Shoes or a Coat that they want. Just too many folks crammed into to little area. Large cities just don't seem safe to Me. When I used to work in large cities we traveled to it got to where I couldn't even sleep. I read a great deal of the posts here I have a great deal of anxiety from any social setting. I hate large crowds and avoid shopping at peak hours or going to popular movies on the first week, or The Mall completely. On occasion I get a bit scared of the dark. even though I know nothings there...theres still something there thats going to get me. One thing I noticed is peoples fear of heights. What they are describing is more a fear of falling from heights than heights itself. I thought I was afraid of heights. Not so, I can go in the tallest building look down and not have a problem. I cannot however go outside, say on an observation deck. 6 Flags over Texas has a nifty tower than one can take an elevator to the top. I did just this and the second the door opened and the wind hit me I began to panic. I clung to the rail in the elevator. The elevator operator told me I had to leave the elevator. I told them I wanted to get back down NOW. she smugly said I had to leave and come in from the other side. I forced myself to crouch/crawl outside the elevator and around to the back side "entrance of it and got right back in. Why the story you might ask. It wasn't the heights but the fear of falling from that height that scared me. Being in the open air at height errr heightens the sensation of eminent falling or possibly being pushed over the edge. I never get this sensation inside a tall building. I assume its a sense of controlled relaxation inside and being unable to control the situation outside. Skildude, the problem is not the fall. It is the sudden stop at the end. |

The ironic part of a fear of heights/ledges/cliffs/etc is you tense up so much that it makes it much more likely you DO have something to actually be afraid of.. more than others. Janice |

My fear of heights is exactly as described by Skilldude, inside tall buildings and aircraft I'm fine, observation decks, total fear. However my phobia takes a strange turn, I cannot watch on TV or film anyone in a high place, action movies where they give you lots of views down. Even stranger, as a video gamer I find first or third person games where climbing is involved very difficult. In one of the Tomb Raider games our heroine has to traverse skyscrapers by jumping form building to building using, whatever she can grab. I can tell you at the end of that sequence my heart was racing and my palms were sweating. So why, I was sitting comfortably in a chair, I could not get hurt, Lara Croft is just pixels and she could not get hurt. Exactly the same at the end of Batman Arkham City where he has to scale a tall tower to catch the bad guy! So why my irrational fear?? |
