as the title of this thread states BOINC keeps processing even after closing the client from the system tray. I dont mean to sound rude but are you guys that hard up for WU processing that the client was configured to keep running after its shut down? I know all I have to do is check the dialog box in the options to ask for confirmation when closing BOINC but I dont feel I should have to enable that option. When the I close the client in the system tray then WU processing should stop completely. I feel like its done this way to trick people into thinking its closed while it keeps right on processing. This is a dishonest practice and should be fixed.

Some people do not want to have the UI hanging around all the time while they are crunching.

I'm not sure what you are talking about?
(and mind: it is very improbable some of the main BOINC developers will read here)

What do you men by "closing the client"?
If you mean "I click [X] at the top-right on the BOINC Manager window" this is for sure NOT "closing the client", this is "Hide BOINC Manager window in systray".

The same is for many programs like Skype, antivirus, µTorrent, Alcohol 120%, TeamViewer, ... - click [X] for them means "Hide window in systray"

I know all I have to do is check the dialog box in the options to ask for confirmation when closing BOINC ...

You need to choose just once (in the 'confirmation box'):
- stop running the tasks when exiting
- remember choice (and the 'confirmation box' will not show in the next exit)

("closing the client" means "sending signal to boinc.exe ('the client') to exit"
Choosing Exit from tray icon is command to boincmgr.exe to exit.
boincmgr.exe can (by your choice) to make boinc.exe exit also but it is not mandatory (and only depends on user choice)

boinc.exe can be used on its own (without the Manager) and be controlled by boinccmd.exe or program as BoincTasks
)

Closed as in the GUI and the icon in the system tray. if you dont have the option checked to show exit dialog then when you exit the client it keeps processing WU's even when the UI is not on screen and exit has been clicked on the icon in the system tray. when I exit the client using the icon in the system tray I expect all processing to stop. It shouldnt keep processing WU's when the client is closed.

BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Tools->Options->Check "Enable Manager exit dialog?"->OK.

BOINC Manager->File->Exit.
Check only Stop running tasks when exiting the BOINC Manager.
Do NOT check "Remember this decision and do not show this dialog" if you don't want to remember.
->OK.

That'll stop boincmgr.exe, boinc.exe and any and all science_app.exe

There are lost of windows services and others running on your pc that run without any window (or tray icon) open...

It doesn't keep processing when the client (boinc client) is closed. The Boinc-client can however keep processing when you close the gui (boinc manager).

You are confused as to what does what.

Boinc client is a background process. It runs 100% independent of the boinc manager. As the other posters have mentioned you need to set boinc manager to exit all tasks (on boinc client) when Boinc Manager is closed.

We apologize if this is confusing to you, but it's important that boinc-client be separate from the GUI boinc-manager, so boinc client can be used on machines that have no GUI interface to run Boinc Manager, and also so people can have Boinc run as a background process again that doesn't depend on any desktop program running.
