Actually, Mayan scholars use a proleptic calendar to correctly identify dates on the Mayan calendar with modern dates. The issue of leap years is dealt with. December 21st 2012 is the actual date on which the Mayan long count of somewhat over 5000 years comes to an end.

Yes, it should end on the first day of winter. Shows they knew how to design a calendar.

A chance for a New Beginning?...

Mayan 'death and rebirth' date marks the perfect time to tackle planet's crisis

'Progress' has brought ecological disaster and the wipeout of species. As the winter solstice arrives, we may not be facing apocalypse but a fresh start in our attitude to the world order

At 12 minutes past noon last Wednesday, 12.12.12, 12 minutes of wintry stillness was broken by the low chime of a gong. The crowd gathered around the Chalice Well beneath Glastonbury Tor linked hands, looked skywards, then touched the earth. A multitude of others did the same across the world – only this place, as everyone knows, is rather special. ...

This is what I think the Bible Revelations is all about. Being "resurrected" means having a new understanding in the same body. "Raising the dead", means teaching people a new way forward, not bringing back to life dead bodies. ...

Hallelujah!

Indeed so. Shame the Catholic Church cannot admit to that lest they lessen their assumed authority from the blind blinkered literal interpretation for the words of St Paul...

But that is a whole different world...
