Vic, sorry, but sashes are used in the US - and not just the bits of cloth that you describe. I suggest you read this wiki entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sash_window about the middle of the page. Desk (Then You and I weren't talking about the same type of sash, as Windows go, I'm used to double hung sash windows, though My current place doesn't use double sash, just Horizontal sliding sash windows. I thought the sash being talked about was a different type of sash, but that's ok.) The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I think we need some rules for the Word Link. I agree with you, Bernie; some of the connections made do seem quite obscure at times. Yet applying rules may well spoil the flow of the game though. I suppose they who host the thread need to make a decision on the threads quality of contents hence do rules need to be applied. I can see the depressed to lithium link, but getting from cane to depressed??? And another one more recently, window - pane - sash - office??? (then a double play with "desk")?????? Anyhow I see Chris has tried to straighten things up with a quick belt Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Just a thought, but this game tends to tell me more about the poster’s mind than the posters skill with words. This alone is very entertaining to me, more so than the ability for people to put words together. So maybe the rules are good enough? |

I can see the depressed to lithium link, but getting from cane to depressed??? Rob, the way Bernie and I see it, Window & pane are closely connected, Pane and sash more of a distant connection for a window frame first needs to come in to play to connect these two. Sash and office connection becomes even more obscure, so really the skill of this competition is to make a direct connection between one word and it's next. If the game was called, "Can you make a connection", then obscure connections then come into play for the skill is then to work out how the connection was made. What we can do is use this Discussion thread to rate the word connections as they appear in the "games thread". So when someone links office to sash then if we think this is a poor connection we can post..."Boooooo" in this Discussion thread and have some fun in the process. Yet, Celt; I on the other hand find it frustrating though when I think the link word is poor and possibly too distant from the word it's trying to link too. ...chalk and cheese I suppose. I suppose the problem is the multi cultural nature of these forums. While the UK, the US and Australia share a common language we do not share common backgrounds or daily experiences. However I have noted that some posters to whom English is not their first language do manage to post logical progressions. So probably the best way forward is to go with Nicks suggestion, if we don't understand a link come here and ask!! I know I will. |

Anyways guys its only a game. If english is only a little similar to my native language words can be seen as interpretation. Is it worth arguing ? With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

In word link, the request should be made for an explanation with any obscure, arcane, or slang interpretations of a word to get a link. I try to do this myself when I post one I believe to be a bit obscure. Cane -> Depressed is obscure to me. Sash to office is not nearly so obscure as some titles come with a sash. The title holder could be said to hold office... BOINC WIKI |

Yes, matter can be condensed from energy, that's how the universe started. I won't contradict that, but energy is not nothing! ;-) Gruß, Gundolf |
