Here in California's Big Valley, the Sun is peeking over the Sierras earlier, and taking longer to drop behind the Coast Range every day. Tonight it stayed light until about 7:45 / 19:45, where it used to be dark by 6:00 pm / 1800 PDT. Folks in my neighborhood are spending more time out in the yard, and I smell barbeque every evening now.

Welcome, Spring!

Here in the Canadian Deep South (where we make great fried chicken) the sunrise today was at 6:41 local, and it will set tonight at 20:08. Just over 13 hours of daylight. We don't get the big swing that central Finland sees, but back in the heart of the Great White North, where I grew up, sunrise today will be 6:15 local, and sunset at 20:36. 14 hours 21 minutes of daylight. By July in Northern Alberta twilight at sunset and sunrise will start to overlap.

And of course at CFB Alert the sun will rise next week, and set in early September.

Here in the American northeast, according to my weather and navigation device (android), the sun rose at 6:26am and we will have 13 hours 29 minutes of daylight.

Here in Johannesburg, South Africa, the opposite is happening. Today, the sun rose at 6.24 am, and it set a few minutes ago at 5.51 pm.

Yes, in the very Midsummer I also tend to think that there is no night but just a period of twilight. At that time of year, seen from my summer cabin across a lake, it is easy to get an illusion that the Sun only passes for a moment behind one particular hill. ;-)

PK

Something similar happens in northern Alberta. However, it is so flat there that it appears as the last glow of sunset moving slowly to the north, then the east, and becoming the first glow of sunrise.

I spent a couple of nights far enough north so that there was less than an hour of darkness.

Pasi, thank you for that memory... waiting for the sun to set, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting!

Always thought it interesting that in Canada during the summer, the sun doesn't really set it just sorta lazily moves across the edge of the horizon.

Finland was fun, nothing like walking around at 0200 wondering why it's sunny and you're exhausted.

I would love to head to the arctic circle someday for the summer solstice.

My children and grand children all grew up or are growing up here in central Alberta. I take the kids out on June 21st to witness what I call Alberta’s white night. Last summer we got to experience the aurora in the sky while it was still blue. I am thinking this will occur again this year and my third youngest grandchild will be here for that week. It gives me joy to think that my grand kids will carry on this family tradition.
In Poland I know that the people of Warsaw also call these very bright nights “The White Nights”.

Ahoy, shipmates!

I’m glad to present you with this image. This ain’t exactly about the light any more, but something related anyway:

It’s the last snow spot in my backyard this spring—or at least I hope so. Taken at about 15:48LT today, with a pencil and matchbox attached in order to assist the evaluation. Counting, diminishing...

On the other hand, a snowfall sometime in June would not be unheard of...

Regards

PK

Yep, It is not unheard of, all it takes is for a cold front to come through with some moisture and then maybe snow hits the ground.

The weekend of 19-23 April I went over Donner Summit (I-80 between Sacramento and Reno) twice.
The road was clear, but there was about 1 foot of snow on the slopes on either side of the freeway.
Should have stopped to take a few pictures, camera was buried in the suitcase.

Going up SR-99, it's more like passing by than through Stockton,
but yes, I did think of you and kinda-sorta waved as I went by.

I have at least two meetings in Sacramento this summer.
Will try to arrange a stop in Stockton on the way home......
