You are using your Graphics card for crunching - therefore the screen saver is turned off...

The graphics (and thus screen saver) are only available on the Seti Multibeam CPU and Astropulse applications, not on the CUDA GPU application.

This with the --by now no longer true-- thought that when you run intricate 3D graphics at the same time as doing calculations on the graphics processing unit (GPU), you may end up with lots of errors in the calculations. However, since the CUDA application was made by Nvidia themselves, and that team of programmers has been disbanded, there's no way that this application will ever get the graphics app added.

Yes, that means you are currently processing a task using your graphics card. The screen saver does not need to be active (and cannot be active when your graphics card is doing the processing) to be doing the science.

I understand you but now i am a little upset because the ScienceChannel TV Show with Official Seti employees cleary show and state that screensaver and shows a young man looking at this very screensaver and noticing an alien message, thinking that i could actually be one of the first people to see this really pushed me to do this. Why won't the Goverments of the World wakeup and cancel all their weapons since we have plenty anyway and start a serious push to colonize and mine Space? i don't understand, it would benefit everyone,Jobs would never run out especially the further we go,The future students would be more intelligent.I remeber growing up and we had no Computers,Facebook, etc, etc, to me thats what made everyone leary of everyone.I bet if you polled the civil world on this and not just the rich, greedy, warhappy, politicians,it would be a over whelming 80% for this World push on colonizing and minning Space.Anyway Thanks for your help

it's been recommended that users with lower end GPU's such as the 8700 you are currnently running not use the screensaver as it will potentially error out your WU's. you'll notice that the 1 WU you've completed took over 5.5 hours which is exceptionally slow even for that card. Turn off the Screen saver and see if that improves performance

You are not going to be able to pick out any message from the screen saver. The detection of a signal involves repeated detections from the same area of the sky at different times. Usually these will be sent to different users machines. The comparison of the various tasks from a single spot in the sky on different nights is done by a server at Berkeley, and not by any of us.

What TV show? What SETI project? Which SETI employees?

There are dozens of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) projects out there, and they are all separate entities. For example, SETI@Home is this project, which doesn't have a TV show on the Science Channel, and it has 4 or 5 official employees. The SETI Institute often gets lots of press because Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen donates to that SETI project.

The SETI@Home screen saver is just a graphical representation of the work you are processing, but in no way should you spend your time staring at a screen saver while your CPU is doing the same work and will record the results automatically.

The show you were watching was likely an advertisement for the SETILive project, run by the SETI Institute. They are offering the ability for users to look at various pictures (which could be confused with screen savers) to spot alien signals. The SETILive project is not SETI@Home, nor is the SETI@Home screen saver the same thing as what they're doing.

Jill and Seth are both members of the SETI Institute, which has no affiliation with SETI@Home. Not having seen the show, I don't know if they actually "borrowed" the SETI@Home screen saver in that scene you saw, or if their new SETILive project has images similar to the SETI@Home screen saver.

Either way, the SETI@Home screen saver is just a graphical representation. All results are recorded by the program and returned to the project - no one should stare at the screen saver looking for alien signals.

Ok didnt mean to offend anyone.Think all of you involved are doing a great job.lol no staring at screensaver, well its a catchy gaget to get people involved i mean i see no reason why that can't be especially with some audio.Charge a small fee if thats whats preventing something like that to exist. The TV show said over 8 million volunteers are doing this,i see potential funds here on multiple fronts with that many people thinking they are helping with finding life outside our solarsystem..wow ! Thanks again

No, you haven't offended me at all. I'm just trying to make sure that people are aware of the difference between what you saw on TV and the SETI Institute is not the same as what you're doing here at SETI@Home.

SETI@Home does not have 8 million subscribers. We have approximately 125,000 active subscribers.

Charging a fee would be nearly impossible given that the project Administrators have stated that they do not want to exclude anybody for any reason. All they need to do is own a computer and have an internet connection. Charging fees would require payment processing fees, processing administration, record keeping, etc. This project only has 4 full time employees and they cannot afford to hire someone to do all that.

Lastly, the audio thing has been requested many times, but it is utterly useless. The sound is the same as tuning an AM radio between stations - its nothing but white noise. A computer can analyze the signals far faster and more accurately than the human ear or eyes.

Not trying to be argumentative here, just laying it all out on the line for you and everyone else reading.

I already answered this question in your other thread here. Try to keep your questions in the same thread so that its A) easier to help you with a log of every bit of troubleshooting that's been done and B) so that others may find the solution to the same problem should they have the same question.
