Ok I did not look at the Tech news and I did not expect it to be plastered all over the threads, I am not trying to justify my reason to quit. Some of us have been working because of the time difference and do not get to read all the posts. Dave PS another reason to quit. |

Some of us have been working because of the time difference and do not get to read all the posts. Without sounding as condescending as you do, I haven't read all posts either. I only just (~45 minutes ago) noticed the forums were back up and have since read all of 2 posts in NC, one in TN, reacted to only your post in NC. Need I explain everything I did today to the minute, or do you give some leeway? |

What a way to acknowledge (or maybe not) your 11-year anniv. |

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Me being here from damnb near the the beginning and you for 11 years the ORIGINAL premise (which you forgot) was we would donate unused cpu cyles for the scientists to use as they saw fit and maybe BOTH parties would reap benifits of the research. It has now become the OMG I NEED POINTS free web game for most of the crowd. It was NEVER supposed to be a game. |

This kind of nonsense defines "jeer-leading". They crunch for 11 years, 31 million units.. and your response is "do not let the door hit you..." ??? That was rude, mean, and completely uncalled for. It is what gives these boards a bad name. Janice |

On the other hand, QuietDad's basic point is absolutely correct. We've all been here for over 11 years now: we should know, and consciously remember, why we're here. We provide spare, and sometimes deliberately created, processing cycles to help the search for ET. SETI@home was most emphatically NOT invented to create a novel form of central heating for our homes. There is no expectation or obligation on the project to supply 'make-work' just for the sake of it. If SETI@home has data it would like processing, I'll help out with that processing. But if it doesn't, I'll find something different to occupy my, and my computers', time. Anyone who expects that SETI should be always, 100%, available needs to look inside their own soul and examine why they believe that. And anyone who makes a 'next 10 years of my life' decision of the basis of a few days' human/mechanical fallibility is welcome to do so. But they should perhaps recognise that it's a personal choice, not anything expected of them (either way) by the project. |

Well said Richard. Speaking for myself, I will be here until the last wu is passed out, or I drop dead. I will also continue to donate dollars when ever I can to help out. I do respect everyones own choices, and Dave, I wish you the best. I'm going for another 11 years. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

i find it somewhat ironic that a guy with less than 2 million credits can tell a guy with over 31 million off like that. maybe i'm just jaded in thinking that we all have made sacrifices for Seti and deserve each others respect. maybe its the blood pressure medicine that i take regularly that keeps me from going nuclear on people. or maybe my parents taught me better than others in trying to understand others and the reasons for their actions. or maybe its "judge not, yet thee be judged accordingly" |

Anyone and everyone can come or go for any reason or no reason. However there is no reason to inflame with the vitriol of red/blue political ploys. I would hope everyone has learned how to disagree in an adult manner. I hope everyone also knows when it isn't their decision. Sorry to see you go Dave. |

Dave Thank You for all that you have put into the Seti Project. Please enjoy your vacation. Even I have taken a vacation. While some people are frustrated due to the hardware problems and the fact the Seti crew is working to get some kind of Science done. Seti Classic used to take weeks off to do Science. The Crew is attempting to make better use of everyones time. So until all the hardware changes are done. The last of the gremlins from the Overheat problem... We can continue to "expect" that Seti is there one minute and offline the next. Currently outages aside Seti is processing more work than ever... If you look at the Server Status page this one section (which was a part of one of the crashes No More Drive Space) 10/6/2010 Data Distribution State SETI@home # Astropulse # As of* Results ready to send 507,355 12,696 9m Current result creation rate 3.3378/sec NULL/sec 5m Results out in the field 6,114,863 139,568 9m Results received in last hour 0 0 5m Result turnaround time (last hour average) hours hours 5m Results returned and awaiting validation 7,837,766 122,839 9m Workunits waiting for validation 8,852 299 9m Workunits waiting for assimilation 462,551 0 9m Workunit files waiting for deletion 0 0 9m Result files waiting for deletion 49,182 0 9m Workunits waiting for db purging 121,879 229 9m Results waiting for db purging 245,472 3,425 9m Transitioner backlog (hours) 0 0m * minutes (m) or hours (h) since last checked if you take time to add Results out in the field + Results returned and awaiting validation = it equals how many workunits are currently stored plus the results that have returned. now compare that to 6/29/2010 Data Distribution State SETI@home # Astropulse # As of* Results ready to send 74,709 0 9m Current result creation rate 44.5135/sec 0.1301/sec 5m Results out in the field 4,846,549 107,180 9m Results received in last hour 46,180 808 5m Result turnaround time (last hour average) 89.53 hours 86.37 hours 5m Results returned and awaiting validation 4,389,308 160,420 9m Workunits waiting for validation 6 0 9m Workunits waiting for assimilation 24 39,233 9m Workunit files waiting for deletion 1 0 9m Result files waiting for deletion 26 0 9m Workunits waiting for db purging 457,985 41 9m Results waiting for db purging 1,016,065 503 9m Transitioner backlog (hours) 0 0m * minutes (m) or hours (h) since last checked a Workunit equal ~367K a Result equals ~31K Then You can tell me that nothing is being done. You (the Seti Users) have caused a change as a result of the project changes. So the Staff is having to adjust to what has changed besides the standard problems. It is likeputting a blindfold on and being told the are 5 moving targets that you have to hit before you can take the blindfold off. Regards Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

After 11 years of crunching it would be a hard thing for me to stop altogether; so considering the obvious dedication that Dave's 31 million credits requires - best wishes to Dave and Seti is poorer as a result. |

I'm here---done tons of work--scaling back yes---quitting: never To me, I don't care if you donate/don't donate, been here 1 year/been here 10 years--special treatment shouldn't occur. We all process WU's towards the same goal and we all deserve equal respect (and treatment). |

I wonder how you justify complaining about other people counting points while you waste server resources by displaying your points in your banner ? Dave, I was ready to quit some time back during the summer, but then decided to convince myself to a more relaxed attitude. I leave the comps running anyway and if they get work, they crunch and if not, then the world will continue to spin just fine. Worked wonders for me. Think about it, and maybe just step back for a moment. If you care a little less about peak performance, the whole thing is a lot more fun :) |

Respect must be earned. It is NOT a measure of ones RAC or Total credit. Respect is very difficult to earn here as this is a non personal interaction betwen individuals. Very few here have ever met face to face. The only way to earn respect in this situation is by not attacking others and their opinions. By not attacking others you earn the respect of your peers and your words are given greater weight than those who do attack others.
