I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate and in the past month or so, Bonic has started to cause a windows exception "appcrash" caused by "setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe". Bonic Manager reports the following: 04/09/2010 11:28:29 SETI@home [error] File 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.249.vlar has wrong size: expected 375355, got 174960 04/09/2010 11:28:29 SETI@home Started download of 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.249.vlar 04/09/2010 11:28:29 SETI@home [error] File 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.172.vlar has wrong size: expected 375353, got 221122 04/09/2010 11:28:29 SETI@home Started download of 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.172.vlar 04/09/2010 11:28:30 SETI@home Temporarily failed download of 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.249.vlar: HTTP error 04/09/2010 11:28:30 SETI@home Backing off 1 min 0 sec on download of 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.249.vlar 04/09/2010 11:28:30 SETI@home [error] File 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.255.vlar has wrong size: expected 375355, got 214376 04/09/2010 11:28:30 SETI@home Started download of 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.255.vlar 04/09/2010 11:28:39 SETI@home Temporarily failed download of 12mr07aa.30349.17659.11.10.172.vlar: HTTP error If anyone can advise on how to correct this it would be much appreciated. |

This messages do not show any crash - just too busy (overloaded) internet at server side. http://fragment1.berkeley.edu/newcricket/grapher.cgi?target=%2Frouter-interfaces%2Finr-250%2Fgigabitethernet2_3;view=Octets;ranges=d%3Aw  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

Thanks Bilbg This is the Windows error window detail that appears every time Bonic / Seti try to run - my preferences are for it to run when the PC is idle. Thanks Bilbg This does not happen to most computers, so it is likely to be your computer somehow. Have you checked your RAM for errors? Have you checked your HD for errors? Is your computer overclocked? Can you check to see if your computer is overheating? BOINC WIKI |

Addendum to what John said; Exception Code: c0000005 See this FAQ for some options to what's causing this specific error. |

Thanks for the suggestions: My PC is a standard Dell 420 XPS so not overclocked. Have tracked any mem errors etc. I did update seti / bonic recently so it could be driver related. I'll try disabling GPU processing first to see it its related to the nivida drivers. Cheers Dean |

I've updated the NVIDA drivers - but no difference. As soon as bonic / seti starts I get the windows errors. Any idea what other drivers I can check? Dean |

Your SETI@home Enhanced 6.08 (cuda) and Astropulse v505 v5.05 (CPU) tasks seam to run OK: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/host_app_versions.php?hostid=4965900 http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=4965900&offset=0&show_names=0&state=2 "Consecutive valid tasks: 20" 1) You can try to install optimized apps to see if the problem will be solved: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=54288&nowrap=true#1029244 2) Or you can try to Exit BOINC completely (No boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe shown in Windows Task Manager) Rename setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe to e.g. OLD_setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe Start BOINC This will force BOINC to download again new copy of setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe but may delete your (only 4 at the moment) SETI@home Enhanced v6.03 tasks What is the length (in bytes) of your setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe ? Can you generate MD5 checksum of your setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe and post it here? To generate MD5 checksum you can use e.g. HxD - Freeware Hex Editor and Disk Editor http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/ "Checksum-Generator: Checksum, CRCs, Custom CRC, SHA-1, SHA-512, MD5, ..." Or Total Commander http://www.ghisler.com/ 3) You can download setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe, rename the old copy and put the new copy in its place. I think the download link is this: http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe 406 016 bytes MD5 (generated by me after I downloaded the file from the link above): D53249AADB1D72CC19DB36359E63425A setiathome_6.03_windows_intelx86.exe (Total Commander generated) D53249AADB1D72CC19DB36359E63425A (HxD generated) 4) What antivirus products do you use? Try to disable the (resident, On-access) antivirus protection (for a few minutes) just before you start BOINC Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

If you think that other SETI files are corrupted on your machine you can download and replace them manually (in <Your BOINC Data folder>\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\) Get the "new" files from: http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/ ( If you get: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /sah/download_fanout/ on this server. press F5 to reload the page. ) Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

I had continual Blue-screen crashs with BOINC/Seti@home on my system at least every ten-fifteen minutes. I'm running Win Vista Ultimate. I've since removed BOINC/Seti@Home and It has yet to crash. Lee Warner CdA, ID |

Projects under BOINC stress out the hardware. Any problems the hardware has, be it in the hardware itself or within its drivers, will easily come to light if you stress it with BOINC. Blue screens of death show a lingering problem on your system. The problem will still be there, even now you removed BOINC. Install anything else that stresses your hardware and I predict your BSODs will come back. The BSODs always show what kind of hardware is having trouble, perhaps in a manner that you can't read, but that people that have been helping out will be able to read. So unless you can say what the BSODs said (you wrote them down, you can check in Dr Watson, you can check in Windows Event Viewer), you'll have worked around the problem for now, but the problem is still there. |

I have found similar problems on my 64-bit, 4-core machine, and it seems that de application settinge in my security package were the culprit. By adjusting their settings and giving the right processes the right rights, all seems to be more stable now... |

You can compair Optimized (SSE3; SSSE3x and SSE4.1) with a Benmark Program and you OC your host's , too, then you stress everything to the max. Since I added a few Graphic cards, for CUDA or CAL, I backed down, the OC a bit. Since the amount of heat can quickly become a Real Problem. (Just had to replace a Mobo, for a friend, who had installed a GTX480 and his PSU couldn't deliver the right amount through the auxilairy CABEL and tried to get it via the Mobo's connections, which DID burn out, with a magnifying glass, you could see the damage, not really much, but not-repairable.). (One of the first Mobo's with an PCI_X x16 slot, obviously not properly protected against this kind is failiar) Did you set/tick, your Preferences in your Account to verify files when send or receive. Better said, not ticked, to not skip verification. And try to set your AV program, not to scan the BOINC Projects folder, this also can cause trouble. |

Sorry to say, the AV program was not the culprit, there's something else wrong, e.g. if I don't start up Outlook soon enough, I will not be able to start it anymore after Boinc has been started, furhtermore the crashing is back... system is running at standard settings, no overclocking done... very misty... think about deinstalling it again. seems a shame, now that I have the computing power... |

I don't see how BOINC can interfere with Outlook or block it from starting. Many things can cause random crashes but first check Temperatures (in idle and heavy loaded system) Temperature Monitoring Programs: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=59292 These programs show also Voltages - check if they are correct and do not fluctuate much (e.g. +12 V drop below 11.5) (you may have weak PSU) Why does my computer crash at random times?: http://ask-leo.com/why_does_my_computer_crash_at_random_times.html Top reasons for random, fatal crashes in Windows: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article07-200 Windows 7 - Random crashes: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/62105-random-crashes-different-causes.html as this task: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1693802704 have "exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)" read also: Unrecoverable error for result "result" (- exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)) http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=98&sessionID=4a5312b8142af63e24a895bb9d9f0892 Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

Hi, As a result of the server crash, I went out to look for other applications to run, and found them in Milkyway@home and Orbit@home. Ran both of these applications without problems, no crashing! As a result of that I switched off Seti@home for a week, still no crashes! This morning I switched Seti@home back on and within two hours I had to restart my machine twice! I'm running the 64-bit version of Seti@home Enhanced 6.03, but that application will not be started again for some time. There is also a problem with Boinc and with my AV program, but that can be remedied by shutting down Boinc for a day and then run Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 separately. I'm sorry to say this, But I will refrain from running Seti@home until the next version. |
