![]() Hello Friends. This naughty little fellow getting into somebody's suet feeder is here to welcome you all to the Fourth Round of our Critter Cafe! I am so flattered that our little critter watering hole has become popular enough to fill so many threads. As always, there are no special exclusion rules on this thread. All are welcome and there is no such thing as "off topic" in The Critter Cafe. I look forward to continuing our many discussions here. Fondly, Angela |

Many years ago.. I had picked up some watermelons from a road side vendor, and placed them without much thought in the back of the van I was driving. Along the way without my noticing, apparently they had rolled against the van door.. and as I opened them at my next stop, fell to the ground and broke apart. By the time I got the remains home, they were pretty much inedible, a bit dried out and would soon be wasted.. as compared to slicing them over a period of several days. There were several raccoons in the neighborhood.. happened to be around scavenging at that point in time.. Normally I do not feed raccoons since they tend to make themselves at home in basements/under porches, and can be a bit destructive... But these would otherwise be garbage so... I tossed the broken melons out a few feet away from the house.. saw them wander over and go to work. A bit later I looked out and there was 5-6 of the critters just having the time of their life.. unlike most food they take to "wash".. these had the melt in your mouth properties that put on quite a show. I had neighbors on vacation next door(it was a resort area) who thanked me afterwards.. saying they got some wonderful pictures out of it. The mess to clean up afterwards was minimal.. Anyway.. if you want to get some great feeding pics of raccoons.. I highly recommend tossing an old melon to 'em. I do not have any pics but.. it seems to work well. Janice |

In order to eat a grape successfully, a raccoon will toss his head back so that the juice from the grape rolls down his throat instead of dripping outside of his mouth. I have never tried watermelon, but I will definitely do so at some point this summer. Thanks for the great feeding tip! |

Raccoons are omnivores, but still I cannot imagine that there is much worse for them than the high protein cat food that they love the most. I tried switching to dog food a few years ago and they turned up their snotty little shoe button noses! I try to limit the cat food they get each evening so that they do not become too dependent on it. I would love it if they ate more slugs and snails out of my yard... |

My experience is their all time favorite is.. your trash can. Which leads to another funny story for another time. Janice |

Since they are so picky, trying putting a little butter and garlic on your slugs. ![]() ![]() |

Hope you can afford all the extra toilet paper. Cats love to unroll it. Hint: Drape the toilet paper so the free end is close to the wall. It makes it harder for the kitty to unroll. ![]() ![]() BOINC WIKI |

Graces water and new litterbox are all setup and waiting for Grace to arrive here after I go and pick Her up in Apple Valley. Oh and Grace is a Black and White cat(mostly Black from what I could tell). Good thing the bathroom isn't any smaller, the Littermaid Mega/Elite litterbox almost doesn't fit. OK, why on Earth has the cat flap got an on board computer and a disability lift built in?! ;) Seriously, why the buttons & lights on something the cat is going to take a dump in?! |
