	5/14/2010 5:36:53 AM BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration. I keep getting this error message and don't know what to do about it. My work units are piling up and they are not being sent. can someone guide me through the process. I have rebooted but still not uploading completed units. I am connected to the internet via cable and am always on. Thanks Richard

Despite Seti having a problem with their upload server, this doesn't account for your BOINC claiming you have no internet connection. You do have an internet connection, else you couldn't post on the forums, but BOINC just can't find it. That's usually the case when it's blocked. So check that BOINC is being allowed (still) through your firewall (boinc.exe needs access to internet on TCP ports 80 and 443). Your last download is 10fe07ah.19626.10297.10.10.192_0 - 14 May 2010 6:34:57 UTC Your Post is - 14 May 2010 23:03:11 UTC 17 hours before your post your BOINC had (and maybe still have) good Internet connection. It has nothing to do with the project being down, one of the servers being down etc. It is caused by something blocking BOINC getting access to the internet. 	Time for some debug output. COuld you visit http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration for instructions on how to turn on: <task>, <file_xfer>, <sched_ops>, <file_xfer_debug>, <http_debug>, <http_xfer_debug>, <network_status_debug>, <proxy_debug>, and <sched_op_debug> Then try the network connections again and post the messages (and there should be many more messages). Note that cc_config has to go in the DATA directory. You will see the location of the data directory within the first few messages after a restart of BOINC. ____________ BOINC WIKI

	ageless you were correct,it was a firewall problem. Yesterday I installed an update for Windows Defender. I went in and de-installed the update and all the completed units were uploaded. Thanks

	You're welcome. :-) Although, isn't Windows Defender a glorified (sorry ;-)) anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-other malware program? Unless Microsoft in their infinite wisdom are now saying BOINC is spyware... Windows Defender webpage wrote: Windows Defender works without distracting you. 	Ok one problem solved, a security update for Windows Defender was keeping my computer from communicating with BOINC. I like to keep my computer up to date with security updates installed. If I reinstall this update for defender where do I go to make the necessay changes with my computer settings so that defender allows communications with BOINC. I'm running Vista 64 and my security settings are all at default level. thanks for the help Richard

	I still don't see how Defender, which is an anti-spyware program, blocks a program from connecting to the internet. Unless it works together with Windows Firewall. But you can try to exclude the BOINC program and BOINC Data directories from being scanned by Defender: How to Exclude files and folders in Windows Vista Defender BOINC Program directory is at default at C:\PROGRAM FILES (x86)\BOINC\ (for 64bit OS) BOINC Data directory is at default at C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ (this directory will be hidden) But otherwise add boinc.exe as an exception in your Windows Firewall. ____________ Jord - BOINC FAQ Service - BOINC User Wiki Real is just a matter of perception.

Windows defender is supposed to be a separate program from Windows Firewall. However, you should check your firewall settings. Windows 7 has a new firewall that may be included in Vista SP2 that does outbound as well as inbound rule checking. I have not looked ad the Vista SP2 firewall, so I really don't know if this is the case or not. ____________ BOINC WIKI
