fixed your link

Hate to say it, but the 5850 has been around for 6 months and they can only get about 10% more than it? thats sad. It looks like Nvidia is in the catchup mode that AMD is having with Intel.

I have had so many setbacks building my mega-cruncher over the last couple of months, that I can hardly wait for these monsters. No matter what I do, my GTX 295 chokes on optimized apps, so I am running standard apps at the moment. Of course, I have been unable to get more than a few WU's lately, so most of the tunning has been done with Einstein@home. I think my system is ready except for these new cards. This is the best hobby I have ever had. Once I get everything installed and tuned, I will measure the wattage consumed, and get a UPS system that will be suffecient. I owe so much gratitude to so many of you as I read your posts, and learned. I have a long way to go, but I know much, much more than I did a couple of months ago.

"Internal benchmarks reveal that GeForce GTX 470 is some 5-10% faster than Radeon HD 5850 and similiar for GeForce GTX 480 over the Radeon HD 5870. Interestingly, the TDP of GeForce GTX 480 is almost similar to Radeon HD 5970 which is a dual GPU card. Interestingly, our sources revealed that there are indeed plans for dual Fermi cards and the TDP of the card is probably gonna be mind blowing."

But what I am most interested in is how it compares to the cards that are now out for running seti?

I have an ati 4770 and an ATI 5850 which only run Milkyway and Collatz. On Collatz I looked at about 50 WU's that I had ran where my wingman was an Nvidia user. the 4770 averages 17-20 minutes/wu on COllatz. I didnt find an instance where an Nvidia was faster. My 5850 just smoke Collatz its processing @a around 7 minutes/WU . Given those numbers I'd have to say the 400 series Nvidias are going to be very fast.

The only thing that I wouldnt predict is the way seti handles the GPU. it may be 3X faster or only marginally faster

Message 980665 - Posted: 18 Mar 2010, 22:54:03 UTC - in response to Message 980654.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, on a CPU 950 overclocked to just under 4.2 GHz at the moment. When I ran the optimized apps, 4 or 5 WU's would be fine, then it made an error. This would go on indefinitly, while every half hour or so, the screen went blank, and a message came up saying the driver recovered. This was without any overclock on the GTX 295. I saw a post that suggested underclocking the card, but I didn't want to do that, as what was the point of running the optimized apps if I had to slow down the system to do it. It runs fine with the standard apps, and I have it overclocked quite nicely. I just got a dozen new work units, so I am hoping to get some sort of benchmark with this system running just SETI, so I can have something to compare to when the new cards arrive. I had huge problems with my RAID 1 for a while. The top drive was dying every week or two. I finally took a hack saw blade, and reengineered the NZXT Beta case to allow more air flow accross the drives. It still failed, so I moved the top drive into one of the top 5" bays, and put fans on it. My RAID 1 finally worked as it was supposed to, so I floored the accelerator to see what the system would do with standard apps. In 4 days time I went from a RAC of about 3500 to over 12,000, then the uploads went dark. I still had a 3 day cache, but that soon exausted itself, and now I am only getting a few non GPU workunits. I have gone back and forth to Einstein@home to make myself usefull, but now that I have a few SETI units to crunch, I'm hoping to see what my system does before the new cards come in. I had originally found a company that had 6 GTX 295 cards clocked at 684 MHz, so I ordered 2 of them at close to $700 a piece. The conpany turned out to noy have the cards, and after a month and non existant customer service, I filed a dispute with the credit card company, and got my money back. Then I found that Sabre PC was pre-selling the GTX 480 cards, so I jumped in and pre-bought 2 of them at $600 each, only to find out the next day, that they had no idea what the cost would be, and that they had faked the info. Well now I find out the cards will sell for $500, but as long as I get 2 of them I don't mind spending the extra $200. I am just so tired of all these set backs. I want to drop the throttle, and see what the system will do. It is a Rampage 2 Extreme, with 12 gig of Corsair DDR3 2000 RAM. I will have that mega-cruncher, but I realize that I have become less patient with dealing with all the set backs. I can't wait to see what this thing will do. My coolent temperature right now is 53° F, and my core temps are about 145° F. That is with a 1/5 hp aquarium chiller cooling my coolant. Next year I will switch to a 1/2 hp chiller, which I will put downstairs, and run hoses up through the floor, to keep the noise down. We sleep in this room with the constant din of the chiller, and fans. As long as it is constant, it is not a problem. The chiller came with a pot across the temp sensor, so I could set the temp below 32° F, but the 145 watts my CPU is pulling are to much for the chiller.

BTW.

What brings this kind of GPU performance if the BOINC client and the SETI@home servers are incapable to support this??

Haa.., wish all good luck! ;-)

Oh and Good luck with the 480 cards.

Well, I guess I'll be the guinea pig, and do the best I can. I will be sure to post any issues I find, so maybe it will help someone else. If all else fails, then maybe I could find a copy of XP 64. I repair computers for people I know, and a few months ago I was upgrading a laptop from Vista to Win 7, but all had was un upgrade and I wanted to do a clean install. I had a copy of XP Pro 32, so knowing that an upgrade of Win 7 will do a full install on an XP machine, I decided to wipe the drive, and install XP on it, and then install Win 7.It wouldn't recconize the machine as being compatible. This was a 32 bit machine too, so it made me a little nervous about trying to add it to my vastly more modern machine. That may have been an isolated problem, and from what I am seeing with many of the posts, would not be an issue for 64 bit systems. I guess I'll try the new cards with Win 7, and if they don't work, I'll look for XP.

If as You say Your PC is a 32 bit PC(cpu and motherboard), Then XP x64 will not run on It, Nor will any 64 bit OS, Sorry about that.

That was a PC I was repairing for somebody. Mine is an I7 CPU 950, which is 64 bit. If there is a way to get more speed out of it, then sign me up!

I bet windows7 Ultimate will work just fine with the 480 as nvidia will want to sell them. Can't wait to see what they will do and how much faster they are then current cards.

I have a few extra MS XP Pro x64 CD's around here, If You get the 480 and would like to get rid of a 295, Maybe a trade could could be worked out.

LOL, I would think a 295 would be worth a few copies....

At this point all I want is for things to work as they should. That's all that matters to me at the moment. The set backs have been so numerous and long lasting, losing a few dollars here and there is not a problem. I am also going to send some more $ to SETI in appreciation for all their hard work. I'm not rolling in money. In fact I am in a lot of debt, but at this point, I will have my mega-cruncher. Full speed ahead!

Those were my thoughts while building this machine. I just had to have at least one serious cruncher and I get a lot of fun out of it to go with the frustration. Heck the frustration is a part of the game, keeps the board active. Believe it or not I have seen these boards like a ghost town when things go good for too long...LOL What part of the country are you in?

You can still see the place he was. Also there are all kinds of scenic things to see here. New Hampshire is small, but contains over 40,000 miles of lakes, rivers, and streams. Not to mention beer, whiskey, or what ever your desired poison. Back on topic, I just heard from Sabre PC, where I pre-ordered these two cards. They told me I might not see them until April, which is fine, but they also told me the price would be adjusted once they got the official word. That is an extra $200 in my pocket, which I will donate to SETI. I really want to help Matt and Eric, and the rest as much as I can for all their great work.
