we will all be bombarded with requests for money for earthquake relief. Nope, Hawaii emergency relief is well rehearsed, and well oiled. They know the drill, they know the construction, they know the recovery. Thx to past Tsunamis, and that a forewarning system is possible, and that officials have zero tolerance for complacency creeping in.... No idea if this will be 1ft or 8ft.... but I do know this will be one of Hawaiis finest moments for the year in terms of human response. |

Last time I heard-- Chile hasn't even asked for any assistance... |

we will all be bombarded with requests for money for earthquake relief. Sorry for the misunderstanding: I meant Chile earthquate relief. There isn't going to be much happening in Hawaii beyond a ripple anyway. (Which probably passed their way an hour or so ago). Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Last time I heard-- Yeah, but my warning was about low-life people who take advantage. If Chile asks for relief or not is moot: the requests from agencies (some real, so bogus) will come. Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

Oops... New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense is warning of up to 1m waves along the entire New Zealand east coast. Don't think you understand the nature of a tsunami wave. That will be a 1 meter tide that lasts 15 to 30 minutes and re-occurs for a couple hours would be a better description than wave. |

we will all be bombarded with requests for money for earthquake relief. Last time there was a big quake in Chile, Hilo flooded. Pearl harbor acts as an amplifier. |

Oops... New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense is warning of up to 1m waves along the entire New Zealand east coast. I don't think you understood what I said??? Oops... The New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense is warning of up to 1m waves along the entire New Zealand east coast. I said or claimed nothing. It all travels through one medium, the media. I only stated what I had heard and saw on the broadcast. - Luke. |

Last time there was a big quake in Chile, Hilo flooded. Pearl harbor acts as an amplifier. Been checking the news but haven't seen any reports of flooding in Hilo. (The wave would have passed through about 1 1/2 hour ago) These waves, in the deep ocean, are no more dangerous than normal tides and weather caused waves. It's a combination of wavelength and water depth that matters. When the wave reached a continental shelf (shallow waters and larger than the wavelength) then the wave slows down, the energy concentrates and bad things happen. So long as it is in deep ocean, it is all a case of hype vs. reality. Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

It's actually not just one wave, But a series of waves, This will take hours, Ships have left port and headed out to sea about 1 mile to wait It out I've read. It's actually not just one wave, But a series of waves, This will take hours, Ships have left port and headed out to sea about 1 mile to wait It out I've read. Yes, i know it is a bunch of waves. But, here is the important part, in deep ocean, where the energy of them is dissipated through thousands of feet of water, they are no more dangerous than the normal tide. Hawaii is safe. Things could get interesting for Luke in NZ or, beyond that, in Australia, but for the folks in Hawaii it is all media hype vs boring reality. any word about the tsunami hitting Hawaii yet? I left to shop around 4 pm central and haven't heard a thing. I assume nothing happened. A small blessing is that it occurred on a weekend. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Hmm, It was nearly 50 years ago that carbon copy earthquake occurred in the same region. The magnitude 9.5!!! 1960 Valdivia earthquake struck Chile. It is also of note that 38 hours after the main shock occured, Cordon Caulle began a fissure eruption. I wonder if it will do the same again? No idea, We'll have to wait and see what ol mother earth has in store. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puyehue-Cordón_Caulle I thought I'd put up a map and a link for the Cordon Caulle area wiki, good read too. any word about the tsunami hitting Hawaii yet? I left to shop around 4 pm central and haven't heard a thing. I assume nothing happened. Tsunamis are extremely dependent on the wavelength and magnitude of the earthquake, the shape of the harbor bottom and the angle that the wave enters the harbor. A wave of any kind is a circular motion of individual water molecules, the depth of the circular motion is the same as the wavelength between crests. When the wave enters a gentle slope and the bottom is no longer deeper than the wavelength, the water molecules cannot complete the circle, and the wave starts to pile up. When sufficient water has piled up, the wave breaks. Some earthquakes produce tsunamis with wavelengths on the order of the depth of the ocean. These are the ones that produce the truly gigantic tsunamis. The magnitude determines how much water is started moving. BOINC WIKI |

Nice explanation(which I was already aware of, But thanks anyway, No glazing eyeballs here), Problem is I just posted a pic and a link to the CNN story.
